For months I have been shaking in my skin
about the local and global food crisis.
The internet makes everything transparent.
We can connect dots as never before.
We are in the same bed--the same farm bed--
with children in India now, presumably watching
their parents writhing on the ground dying
after imbibing pesticides.

We have children locally eating substances
at "nutrition" breaks that some consider
breaking down health.
These are the approved "foods"
contracted into the schools.

Then, there is a growing U.S. Food Movement
becoming the envy of the world.
Eaters and farmers meet every day
at Farmers' Markets to foster friendship,
trust, and share fresh food picked
that very morning and grown within 100 miles.
A growing popularity of
Farmers' Markets is creating new jobs.
College graduates
imagine becoming farmers. Others,
in less fortunate neighborhoods,
want food justice through equal access
to food, the foundation of healthy self expression.

Look closely at the nature of our times.
It was Hypocrites who said, let food be your medicine.
Were he, the Father of Western Medicine alive today,
he might be subject to fines
by our very own Food and Drug Administration--FDA.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture--USDA
now holds the position that all forms of ag
from GE, to conventional, to organic
can coexist. They know GE alfalfa
as an example may drift into organic
standands, but feel most of us simply do not care.

The Food Safety Moderization Act (#s-510)
may soon go before Senators eyes in the coming weeks
and remain below the radar of most of us.
Advocates question if the bill identifies the crux of the problems
of Food Safety that lie within a contaminated
big ag system. From Washington's viewpoint,
our local family and small farmers do not have enough
paperwork. Let us regulate them more, they say.
Seeking solutions to Food Safety issues,
Others wonder if the new Food Safety regulations
that would enhance FDA powers locally
are not intended to nip the bud of the growing
food movement before it's popularity gets out
of hand.

Why San Diego?
We are a city that vyes as
the nation's leading
Biotechnology center. Our advances
in Biotechnology are esteemed around
the world. Our colleges and universities
are among the greatest of cutting edge
research institutes. Stimulus funds and national
policy are banking on Science and Technology to get us out
of our economic woes. San Diego
now receives tons of this money and wants more.

At the same time
we are a city that can feed every
one of its citizens with from its
own local organic foodshed,
and export huge amounts to feed
the rest of the nation. This is
part of our farming history, and
some say, farming future. Some here
know that it is in the Bank of Compost
where life breeds.

We are a city of
models--local city colleges and high
schools with state of the art gardens
and masterful inspired heart-centered garden teachers;
we have local sustainability projects staffed by
near full time volunteers;
Victory Gardens everywhere;
a city of advocates
working side by side with Somali's,
and others once disenfranchised.

We are a city that wants more community farms and gardens.
We're getting to know our elected leaders
and administrators to make this happen.
In the next month we will fill our parks with
more than 80,000. San Diego is the nation's
leading city for free Earth Day and multi-cultural
Earth Day happenings.

All these issues and more--are only the tip
pointing out why the upcoming
2010 Cultivating Food Justice Conference
will be a hot ticket.

We are at a national tipping point.
This tipping point will be advanced when
between 500-1000 locals
and internationals gather at San Diego
State University (SDSU) April 24-25 to discuss
these timely issues.

The venue is free and features
keynote speakers Raj Patel,
acclaimed author and activist
on global food crisis issues,
as well as Barry Logan, an astute
friend of soil and local community.
His La Milpa Organica Farm, a model
for our nation, is now
being sited for regulation infractions.

Both Patel and Logan are sympathetic
to La Via Campesina,
the international movement of peasants,
small- and medium-sized producers.
These issues and more will be voiced
at the upcoming two-day event
that will feature more than 30 workshops,
music makers, poets, ceremonialists,
and more.

The 2010 Cultivating Food Justice Conference
is Free to All--and will be well attended.
What would you imagine at an event
that offers free breakfast and lunch,
oodles of free local grown, organic foods;
natural food products;
and great April weather?

Our very own president, Barack Obama
as well as local city administrators
have said, "Show me the movement."
All eyes, local, national, and international
will have something to see April 24-25
in San Diego. A movement converges.
Be the movement. We are many pulses
now converging into one beat.
Help root our movement now.
