How I met SHEBA PENNER, the mother
of EVE. It was EVE who heard spend
quality time with me on the second day
of this ROSH HASHANAH, when I came to
see her husband, REB ZALMAN. REB ZALMAN
had other things on his mind, like guiding
the service. I got a chance to tell EVE
about the New "HASEED" movement I
was starting this 5770. She gave her
Blessings... Eve: A good name to have.
A good blessing from one of the first Women.

SHEBA was the first person who I relate to being
a Kabbalist that I knew personally. We met some
time around 1993, maybe earlier.

Went into the basement this morning
seeking a photo I remembered I took
of SHEBA PENNER, the mother of
EVE ILSEN, wife of REB ZALMAN SCHACHTER-SALOMI.
SHEBA was a friend of mine.
She died a number of years ago.
She was quite the gardener, but the last
time we talked she had moved out of the country.
I first met her through meeting
her husband Rabbi SAM PENNER.
I was very estranged from my Jewish roots
in those days, my friendship
with Rabbi SHLOMO CARLEBACH
I met SAM and SHEBA.
SCHLOMO was kind of a double agent.
We would both be a part of various closing ceremonies
at the WHOLE LIFE EXPO in the 80's.
An entourage of chasids in black coats would come
to these closing ceremonies.
I imagine some part of Shlomo was present
to guide wayward Jewish youth back to Judiasm,
but it was because of his presence here at these
New Age Festivals that he was introduced
to various natural health practices that I sensed had fallen
out of Judaism. I remember him drinking carrot juice.
Shlomo would call me the greatest Jew of all.
In my estagement, that meant something.
Later, I learned that he likely said that to many.
We became close through doing those ceremonies.
He once said, that when the Messiah came,
Leslie would be his M.C. He realized that I truly
believed in what I was doing, that peace for me
was not something I just said, but that the
pursuit of peace in the world was something
that I breathed. He would introduce me at
this ceremonies.
I would always bring trays of baby herb plants
to give away, and they went out of there
with all that energy.
He would come to San DIego on occasion.
I would go to see him, go to places I would
never enter--synagogues.
The first time I went to hear him,
it was at the "shule" of Rabbi WAYNE DOSICK
who over the years. His wife ELLEN and he are
endeared friends.
At the first concert, I also took a picture
of a man who was to later become one of my
closest friends, DR. GARY HARTMAN.
I could never approach Judaism directly.
I felt too wounded by on original pain work
that was in a Jewish context, but through coming
close to SHLOMO and later Gary, then Ellen, and then
Wayne, I could make bridges.
It was on a second visit to San Diego that
Schlomo performed at the synagogue of
Rabbi Sam Penner. He also reached out to me,
and I was able to connect with his kindness
and humanity. I met his wife Sheba thereafter,
and realized that we were kin in our mysticism.
I first met Reb ZALMAN at the Harmonium Mundi,
an event in Orange County in the late 90's or so.
He was teaching with another Rabbi who taught
Jewish Meditation. His name was Rabbi JOHNATHAN OMER-MAN.
I could hardly sit in the room. I felt so estaranged.
Those were my New Age days. I came up to
Reb Zalman and attempted to talk to him.
He was preoccupied, and could not give me time.
I was attempting to share with him my estangement.
He did not have time to hear me, and this hurt.
That was the event where Reb Zalman met
the DALAI LAMA. I had brought my Shofar,
an instrument that I would blow at New Age Ceremonies.
There was a private reception for the Dalai Lama.
I again felt excluded, I sent in my shofar to be blessed
by him.
A day later, it was announced that he was to be
given the noble peace prize. Another part of my soul
was alerted when I heard this. A press conference
was called. I had to get in that room. I used my press
credentials, credentials I could have used the day
before, had I wanted to get in that reception.
I was standing off to the right.
The room was filled with the international press.
They all came to that conference now. It was
the announcement that drew them present.
At one point, the Dalai Lama, turned his body
in my direction, and seemed to look directly at me.
There was mind contact.
It was as if he was saying to the New Agers,
"See, all this attention is coming your way. Prepare yourselves."
It the early 70's right after my times living with
DR BERNARD JENSEN, my first Essene Teacher,
I would go to this festivals. We would travel
all the way to a place in Arizona called HEALING WATERS.
The New Age community back then was in its formative
years. It felt like we were newborn.
Those were the years that EDMOND BORDEAUX SZEKELY
was still alive. I was living in a herb warehouse downtown
called the MEDICINE WHEEL COLLECTIVE.
There were these ESSENE BIOGENIC WORKSHOPS in San Diego.
The first year of these seminars, I asked a lot of questions.
I had already been schooled in the natural healing arts
by Dr Bernard Jensen. Szekely took me into a private room
at the Swedenborgian church. He offered me to become
an Essene Minister. He read souls. He could tell by my questions
that I was already part of the Essene Soul Group.
The Professor at times in his time was a close friend
of Dr. Bernard Jensen. They had taken journeys together
to Mexico. Dr. Bernard Jensen always thought highly of
Professor Szekely. He called him a walking encyclopedia
I do not remember when I first got Reb Zalman's attention.
Oh, yes, now I remember. I would come up to Los Angeles
after the New Age went stale for me.
At those same WHOLE LIFE EXPOS, I met a singer
songwriter minstel, STEPHEN LONGFELLOW FISKE.
STAN LEVY was his attorney, and he would perform
as part of the High Holidays for Stan.
Reb Zalman came to Stan's backyard one year
and did the a service around the High Holidays
had to do with the opening of the new torah.
Reb Zalman had phenomia (sp) that day, but
I was able to talk some great photos.
Photos: Ah was a gift, to hide behind a camera!
Photos: Through photography, I could show the
world how I saw life.
I really saw Reb Zalman that day.
Some of those photos that day were later used
in brochures by ALEPH, the ALLIANCE FOR JEWISH COMMUNITIES
to promote his legacy project. They use the photo, but
I do not imagine anyone stops to think who took it
or where it came from.
There is a curious web that runs strong
below the surface that ties the earth and the soul
together.
I say that the earth and soul are soilmates.
All these souls I have mentioned here
are part of a Soul Group Activity
I would call the Essenes, each and every one of them.
I am not sure where Shlomo fit in.
In 1993, I attended my first Kallah,
the national gatherings of ALEPH.
The tuition was expensive. Reb Zalman
paid part of my scholarship out of his pocket.
I will never forget that act of generosity.
I believe that was before he married Eve,
the daughter of SHEBA and SAM.
It is a curious web, this Essene Soul Group.
It makes me feel less isolated now in my human
part, to know there are threads that connect
who we are and what we are born to do in this life.
