Abdominal Pain

Muscles are often overlooked as the cause of internal abdominal pain but strained muscles caused by exercise, poor posture, sitting too long, or emotional stress can cause internal and external pain.

Whilst abdominal pain can be a sign of a serious problem it can just as easily be caused by bad muscles and in the absence of other symptoms it is worth trying to treat them before looking elsewhere.

The muscles between the ribs call intercostals and can mimic gallbladder trouble or ulcers. Anxiety, chest breathing, overexertion, and coughing can cause these muscles to be strained and go bad. They then refer pain either locally or to other parts of the body and organs.

The abdominal muscles are very busy and responsible for bending twisting arching and stabilise the spine. They support to body for every conceivable activity. They assist with breathing, movement of blood from the legs, vomiting, urination, defecation, childbirth, etc. When these belly muscles become sick hey not only cause pain in the stomach, sides and back but also internally and to the sex organs and anus. They can lead to the wrong diagnosis of organ condition.

Muscle problems in the upper abdomen can be mistaken for heartburn, hiatal hernia, gallstones, stomach cancer, peptic ulcers, heart disease or indigestion. They may even be responsible for nausea and loss or appetite.

Muscle problems in the lower abdomen may cause colic, stomach cramps, chronic diarrhoea, being bloated, full, swollen and burning gut. Bad muscles can even mimic appendicitis.

Low abdominal muscle problems can give the same symptoms as an inguinal hernia. They can also cause painful spasms in the urinary bladder and make urination difficult or hard to control. They may also be responsible pain in the sexual organs, menstrual pain, pain in the uterus and ovaries.

Abdominal muscle problems also refer pain to the back either as a band of pain around the lumbar region or just below the shoulder blades.

There is no way of knowing for sure that pain is cause in the in the organs is caused by bad muscles but it is worth exploring. Trying to get fit, sit-up and leg-up exercises are notorious for causing internal organ pain. Sitting in a twisted position or sitting too much can do the same. Some people are very prone to straining muscles such as those with Fibromyalgia.

I couldn’t understand that despite getting rid of my gallstones and IBS that I still had an awful chronic pain in my abdomen. When I changed my exercise regime and stopped doing sit-ups and started doing self massage and yoga instead the pain disappeared in two weeks.
