Masdar City Aims to Leave No Carbon Footprint

With the construction of Masdar City underway, the dream of developing a carbon-neutral city is becoming a reality. Plans for the city, which is to be built just outside Abu Dhabi and projected to be the most sustainable in the world, were developed by British architect Lord Foster and unveiled at the World Future Energy Summit in January—and have since received much acclaim.
The city (after it is constructed) will run entirely on renewable energy: solar paneling will generate electricity, batteries will power a personal rapid transit system, and water treatment programs and waste management systems will coordinate the reuse of resources. The plan, of course, is ambitious, leaving many to wonder why it is being undertaken by the UAE, an oil-rich nation that sits on nearly 10 percent of the world’s oil reserves, according to NPR.
“The answer is simple,” Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co., the developers planning the city, told NPR. “There are two reasons. Number one, because we can. Number two, because we should. And because this is a logical step and a natural extension for our involvement in the energy markets.”

TH: What about food? I can’t imagine how you could create that out of thin air.
JW: We are looking at the carbon footprint of the food that is brought into the city. A Masdar code will actually be developed that looks at how food is grown and produced and brought to the site – the carbon footprint of that banana, whether it came from Indonesia, Brazil or Africa. We will try to emphasize local production, incentivizing the local market. The city itself will not support large-scale food production, it’s not designed that way. I would imagine we could grow about five to ten percent locally.
We’re also going to be doing some experimentation on plants, what kind of plants it would be possible to grow in this type of climate that require less water. And we’ll be looking at a vertical farming demonstration project, where you can actually grow vegetables for your salad on site to help reduce the carbon footprint that comes from the imports. And then we’ll start to target some of the consumer products that it may not make sense to bring into the city, and minimize the waste and carbon footprint brought into the city.

ABU DHABI, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Abu Dhabi's Masdar said on Thursday it is building the Middle East's largest solar power plant for the carbon-neutral Masdar City.
Half of the 10 megawatt photovoltaic plant's solar panels will be supplied by First Solar Inc (FSLR.O), the U.S.-based company said in a statement. Its shares rose 6.5 percent following the announcement.
The $22 billion Masdar City -- the green city in the desert -- will be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses. No cars will be allowed.
First Solar's thin film solar panels are cheaper to produce, but generate less electricity, than traditional silicon-based solar panels. The remaining 5 MW of Masdar's solar power plant will be built from crystalline silicon panels. The supplier is yet to be named.
