I'm sure everyone on this list has received the internet rumors about the food safety bill HR 875 (Rosa DeLauro's bill). I've got an update on what's going on with food safety. I wrote it up on my blog (link below) but the short version is that Congress is in recess for the next 2 weeks and then the House will likely begin moving on food safety legislation. The bill that they move on will NOT be HR 875, nor will it be any of the current bills. Instead, it will be a new bill that will be similar to John Dingell's bill, HR 759, but with stronger traceability provisions.
With all of the crazy rumors going around, DeLauro's office has been absolutely slammed with calls asking her to consider organics and small farmers. And she's actually listening to those calls! However - she's not going to be the main decision maker on the bill that passes. If you want to get your $.02 in on food safety, the best Congresscritters to call are Henry Waxman (202) 225-3976, John Dingell (202) 225-4071, and Bart Stupak 202) 225 4735. (You should probably call instead of email because they might only read emails from people who live in their districts.)
