Most Expensive Items on the Planet
Some morning thoughts inspired
by looking at Tibesti, a site that
features expensive things. Beets?
How Valuable are they in the overall
picture????

I do not want to create a run on locally, grown
organic beets, but I consider them one of the
most Valuable Things to possess right now.

This page features the most expensive
items you can have, including a cradle made out of
gold for a mere $7900.00.
What can you do with an item like that?
It would be good for giving your baby a sense of
wealth I imagine.
A silver one might be more practical.
Sliver eminates the ability to kill off bacteria.
Then we come back to beets.
I am so happy that President Obama
is getting a reputation of hating them.
Maybe that will chill the run on the Farmers' Markets
of people who want a locally, grown organic beet.
What can you do with a locally, grown organic beet?
You can replant it in a pot
in the richest possible soil.
I recommend FOXFARM blend from the Ocean and Land.
YOu can KEEP the BEET.
You can continue to harvest the greens.
You can eat the greens raw or steamed or
in other ways. You beetroot will continue to grow.
You will have a supply of greens for a very long time.
They just keep growing back.

of my own food!!!!
Some people start asking, what else can I grow in a pot?

This can be very stabilizing, and also enriching.

A bad relationship can ruin your day,
or your life. It is enough to give you a bad hair day
for sure.

You can learn you can grow food!
For thousands of years, until maybe
the last 150, many more people then are alive today,
relatively speaking, knew that if push came to shove
they could always grow something to eat.
Today, more and more kids have no idea how seeds
work.

Saving your own Beetroot Seed:
Beetroot seed is fairly easy, provided you
don't have any chard or leaf beet flowering nearby.
Beetroot flower in their second year,
so you need to either leave them in the ground overwinter,
or dig up your beetroots in Autumn.
Lay them all out so you can compare them, and select the
best 10 - 15 roots:
Make sure you choose ones that are true-to-type:
right colour, shape & size.
If your area has cold winters, store them
in sand or sawdust in a cool but frost-free place, and plant out in spring.
(the ideal is about 5-10 C and 95% humidity).
Otherwise in milder areas, replant them straight away
where you want them to grow.
The next summer they will flower (to about 5 foot high!).
They will probably need staking so that they don't fall over.
Remember, that they will cross with any other flowering beetroots,
chard or leaf beet nearby. The flowers are wind pollinated.
... Your seed will be ready in late summer.
Just rub the seed off when it is mostly brown.
You will get huge amounts of seed: dry it well,
and it will be good for 3 or more years.
Above you can see a good trick with beetroot
or chard seed. Our rubber door mat has holes in it.
We just stomp on the dry seed-stalks ,
then roll back the mat and sweep up the seed.
Seed-saving instructions are included with your seeds,
so you can do this yourself.
And of course, seed-saving
is only possible because these are all real, non-hybrid varieties.
