I'm stepping back from the regular blog to ask you to do something for
me. Most of the people on this list are from California, but a lot of
you are from all over. No matter where you are, if you know someone in
Southern California, please pass this on to them.
Three weeks ago, Plug In America decided that since we didn't get in
the Presidential Inaugural Parade, we'd conduct our own here in Santa
Monica with highway-capable plug-in vehicles. The intent would be to
celebrate Obama's inauguration and to impress upon as many people as
possible that using domestic, renewable electricity to power our cars
is both viable and much in demand.
The "viability" will be on grand display with over 70 vehicles
committed for the parade, which will start and finish at the Santa
Monica Civic Auditorium. A flyer's attached with all the details.
We'll have everything from Teslas to Mitsubishi's hot new iMiEV, the
plug-in hybrid version of Ford's Escape Hybrid, an all-electric Balqon
truck that hauls 60,000 lbs., and Vectrix, Brammo and Zero
Motorcycles. We'll also have numerous Toyota RAVs, Ford Rangers and
Chevy S-10s--the vehicles we saved and which are featured in "Who
Killed the Electric Car?" Just today we landed a PHEV school bus and
(you're going to love this) a fully electric Hummer H2. Oh yes! :~)
We intend to show America that this technology is ready - NOW! We'll
also be holding a press conference to tell Obama, Detroit and Congress
that Americans want plug-in vehicles--one million by 2012 and 10
million by 2016.
We'll start at 9:30 Saturday morning. The press conference will
feature California state Sen. Fran Pavley, the author of the first
global warming legislation. Also speaking are WKTEC director, Chris
Paine, a young woman named Jordan Howard whom Zan and I met at an
Obama fundraiser after she introduced Hillary Clinton. Very
impressive. We'll have Ed Kjaer, Southern California Edison's manager
of the world's largest fleet of EVs and the go-to guy when OEMs want
to test a new EV. Some other notables are tentative, and I'll say a
few words to close the press conference.
We'll do all this standing next to Santa Monica's 40 kW solar carport
equipped with chargers, readily demonstrating that by covering our
nation's surface parking lots, and the tops of parking garages, we
will allow for simple harvesting of clean electrons from the photons
that will forever fall on that piece of Earth. The cars that charge
there pay the equivalent of less than a $1/gallon, and all of that
money stays in our community.
We can do this instead of buying oil from Saudi Arabia.
All we need are the cars.
Come help us send our message and invite everyone you know in SoCal.
The bigger crowd we get, the more media, and that means more people
will learn about plug-ins. Therefore, just attending this parade is a
political
act. You get to celebrate Obama's inauguration three days early with a
Peet's coffee in your hand and SoCal's warm sunshine on your face. The
same sunshine, I'll remind you, that will power your next car.
