Most financial predictions aren't worth a plug nickel. I don't know where the Dow will end 2009, and nor does anybody else.
But here's one call you can rely on. Whatever happens in world stock markets next year, it won't be as bad -- at least in dollar terms -- as 2008.
Ten investments to watch in 2009
That's because world markets fell about 46% this year. It is - almost - mathematically impossible for them to fall as much again. Many markets, from Hong Kong to Great Britain, fell by more than half. Like the optimistic skydiver whose parachute didn't open, they can jump the rest of the way from here.
Markets are, literally, unpredictable. The only way to approach them is to brace yourself for surprises.
What follows are not investment tips, or predictions. Here are simply 10 investments I'll have on my watch list during 2009, and why:
