Two Days Before
trying a water fast for the first time
Date: 10/30/2008 10:21:37 PM ( 16 y ) ... viewed 1762 times I've had a very interesting life, I've lived all over the world, had some great adventures and have tried many different things. But I have never tried a water fast, and it seems like it's time.
I've done other type of fasts, I did a three day apple fast, a few raw food fasts of various types but this will be my first try at a water fast, and there are several reasons why I want to try it....
I have yet another travel adventure coming up, in about nine days. The trip itself will only last a week but it's already caused me to push many boundaries that I am grateful and excited I have crossed. I had always liked the idea of scuba diving, but it also terrified me, as this coming trip is set in the Caribbean and I will be with a fellow, experienced diver I pushed myself to try scuba. After two weeks of classes and a crazy weekend at a lake I am now a certified scuba diver, and it is quite an awesome thing. I am over the moon with joy that I made myself do it because it is one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. But I digress and let me get back to the water fast.
For about two months now I have been eating very well, or at least a lot better than I had been eating for years, a lot of raw foods, low calorie and fat but high protein, lots of water and all those good things. I lost 30 pounds in those three months and I feel great. But I would like a big health boost just before my Caribbean trip, so I've been researching various fasts like mad. At first I considered The Master Cleanse but for some reason it's not sitting right with me, and to be honest maybe it's just that I prefer the taste of clean, cool water to that of maple syrup. And there are several reasons why I want to do a quickly, seriously detoxifying fast. The first reason is that the trip coming up is going to be very active, besides diving there will be some rock climbing, cave exploring and more, I want to feel prepared for these things mentally as well as physically. And I will be bluntly vain, I also want to reduce cellulite and a bit more weight before I am out there in not much clothing. There are a few other reasons why I want to detoxify - while doing my diving studies I suffered a barotrauma, which pretty much means my ear was slightly damaged from pressure and it is right now filled with fluid which is blocking my hearing and just feels uncomfortable, I believe a water fast will help clear that, I also have had a lingering cold or some sort of virus that is keeping my throat sore and my nose runny and for some reason my skin has been breaking out in recent weeks, I want to get out all that nasty stuff that is causing those problems before I have a week of adventure on an island. I want to approach the island with renewed health and vibrancy.
I am also using the fast, as I think a fast should be used for, as a time of meditation, reflection and inner growth. I am not Christian, or subscribe to any major religion in fact, but I do see fasting as a time of possibly great spiritual growth. And for some reason I am really excited about having seven days to work on that side of myself as well.
I am going to start the fast on Nov. 1st and end it on the night of Nov. 7th, for the last two days (and I will continue tomorrow) I have been consuming only liquids - broths, juices and water, though I've had the occasionally nibble on a cracker or piece of bread. This in and of itself has been interesting, at first I found I had quite a few cravings, but it suddenly became clear that they were actually really, surface type things and quickly passed if I didn't indulge in them or try to convince myself that I should indulge in them. I feel like I am somewhat prepared to start on just water but I am also not entirely sure what to expect so it will be an interesting experience all around.
I am glad I found a place where I can journal the fasting experience because I think that is going to be an important part of the process and it will also be a way to keep me busy should cravings creep up, and a good way to keep myself busy and my mind focused on what I am doing and why.
So one more day of juices and broths and maybe a bit of protein and veg, and then Saturday morning it will be water only for seven days. I'm looking forward to the journey.
