Ate a Whale Tail. Had Fun with Ric the Surfer

Had fun yesterday with Ric of Whale Tail Corn Chips.
Good Fun, good chips. He showed me where they are
in the store. My neck didn't generally look up on the top row.
Oh, now I see where the Whale Tails live at WFM Hillcrest

Eat Local Buy Local

It's a philosophy that Whole Foods Hillcrest practices every day. Today, Saturday July 12, Whole Foods invited the neighborhood to meet the owners of San Diego's top local food entrepreneurs. A lot of Whole Foods customers agree with their philosophy and shopping local has economic and environmental benefits. Supporting your local business not only contributes back to the local economy, but it helps to foster new entrepreneurs.

Ray Kau and Carolyn Kates, the in house marketing team of Whole Foods Hillcrest, limited the event to their vendors in the San Diego area. Each of the demo tables had a Farmer’s Market look with linens and table décor. The vendors supplied products to include as raffle items for attendees. Ray Kau, of Whole Foods, said "Our goal was to make this a fun, festive event that will educate our customers about the many benefits and opportunities to buy local and think global."

Just a few of the local favorites in attendance this year were Phil Noble of Sage Mountain Farms who has a slogan that helps reassure "It's Organic Don't Panic", Joel Cardoza, of American Tuna, was also there and he gently reminded us of the different methods of obtaining our seafood." Do you want to eat a can of tuna for 99 cents and support an industry that destroys everything in its path by dragging nets along the bottom miles at a time? or pay a little more and eat the best tasting tuna you have ever had and help insure your great grandkids will be able to enjoy a tuna sandwich for lunch in the future?."

It is all about quality and sustainability for Joel's San Diego company that uses a "Pole method" to capture tuna off our west coast.

A new salsa company, Salsa Del Rey, made an appearance alongside the Whale Tails Tortilla Chip demo table this year. In fact Salsa Del Ray, a company started by a local schoolteacher, Grace Kamenides, was using Whale Tails Tortilla Chips to allow customers to sample their variety of fresh salsas. It was perfect placement "Chips 'n Salsa" side by side. Heather Kraszewski of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips informed me that even the national spotlight sometimes shines on San Diego food entrepreneurs.

Heather said " the story of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips will be featured on the Food Network show "Road Tasted with the Neely's" that airs tomorrow night at 11pm. " Outside in the tented area I ran across Jackie Anderson of Jackie Jams who is excited about what the future holds for her "real fruit - real flavor" jams. Jackie, of Ocean Beach, is overwhelmed by the support her product has received.

And of course if you want to know anything and everything about Local Organic you must take a moment (and I did) to talk to the "Enchanted Gardner" Leslie Goldman. His new project "Keep the Beet" will inspire and educate everyone to be their own gardener. "Start small " he says "and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish". Sounds like good advise for all these local vendors. Be sure to visit
Http://www.lesliegoldman.com
and you will discover a whole new world of local organic products.

So the next time you see the one of the local folks from Whale Tails Tortilla Chips at a local beach cleanup or stocking the shelf of a snack aisle just come up and ask them how they got started, who helped Whale Tails Tortilla Chips along the way, or ask them about the ingredients, Most small food entrepreneurs have a cool method for making their product , a funny story how they got started, or are just doing the right thing while having fun. How will you ever know what that story is if you don't take the time to say 'Hello Neighbor!'

An article came out on Keep the Beet yesterday.
Darryn Bennett did a great job. There are a few typos
and tiny corrections I made on the Plant Your Dream Blog.
