Details
Last year, 400 people came together for the Food Not Lawns "Cultivating Food Justice Conference". This year, they decided to do something a little different, and are hosting an event focused specifically on food policy. In collaboration with the San Diego Hunger Coalition, San Diego Community Farms and Gardens, SD Roots Sustainable Food Project and Tierra Miguel Foundation, they've invited the California Food and Justice Coalition (CFJC) to host a work session to help us "hammer out a healthier food system".
Specifcally, CFJC will be soliciting input for their statewide advocacy efforts--amplyifying our needs through the strong network they've built throughout California! They'll also help us identify policy issues we can work on locally, as well as present opportunities to engage with their new statewide technical assistance program.
As California's second largest urban area, and the nations 12th largest agricultural producer, San Diego needs a strong voice in the food policies that effect our communities!
We really hope you can join us for this important event, March 1st from 12-5pm at the Sherman Heights Community Center (2258 Island Ave.). Potluck from 12-1pm; Worksession 1-5pm.
Space is somewhat limited, so please RSVP to Jessica Bell with CFJC at jessicabell@foodsecurity.org or by calling 510-704-0245.

Subject: Thank you for RSVPing to the San Diego Member Meetup
To: Jess Bell
Hey folks,
Thank you for RSVPing to the San Diego Member Meet up taking place on Sat. March 1st, 12pm – 5pm, Sherman Heights Community Center, 2258 Island Ave., San Diego, CA. From 12pm – 1pm we will be hosting a pot luck so please bring something delicious to share. (Please forward this email along to other folks who would be interested in seeing this document!)
This event is cosponsored by Food not Lawns, San Diego Hunger Coalition, the Tierra Miguel Foundation and the San Diego ROOTS Sustainable Food Project. Thank you so much for working with us!
Our ability to create change is dependent upon how many of us are involved, our level of involvement and our ability to choose smart programmatic and campaign work that benefits our interests. It's rare that we can plan and vision in a proactive way, and this is one of those times. Thank you for joining us.
I've attached a briefing document that outlines some of the thinking that CFJC has done so far to help us in our work to answer the two questions that we've set for ourselves:
What should we advocate for over the next two years?
How can our emerging training and mentorship program best support groups like yours?
I want to emphasize that this document is just the starting point of a larger conversation that we're having over the next four months across the state. We anticipate that our priorities will change and solidify as time advances and we gather your input.
If you have any questions please contact me at 415 425 8837!
Thank you.

Mission Statement
The California Food and Justice Coalition is a statewide membership coalition committed to the basic human right to healthy food while advancing social, agricultural and environmental justice. We are partners of the national Community Food Security Coalition, and collaborate with community-based efforts in California working to create a socially just, ecologically and economically sustainable food supply.
We envision a California food system in which all activities, from farm to table, are equitable, healthful, sustainable, and community-driven.
CFJC Pledge
We believe:
That access to healthy food is a basic human right and must not be compromised
That communities are enriched by the cultivation and celebration of diverse food traditions and experience
That the production, distribution, and preparation of food must be healthy and humane for all humans, animals and ecosystems
That agricultural land and biological diversity must be protected for future generations
That all food commerce must be just, democratic and economically fair
We support:
Food systems that are responsive to and reflective of each unique region, and are supported at the state and federal level
Ecological farming practices and efforts to minimize the number of miles food travels from field to table
Decent and just living and working conditions for all workers from farm to table, and democratic participation in their workplaces
The provision of adequate publicly funded safety nets while working to minimize the need for them
Community-based, culturally appropriate nutrition education
A restoration of the connection between people and the sources of their food, and the revitalization of agrarian cultures
Increased awareness of indigenous food and agricultural histories
We work to:
Assess, research and address the root causes of food insecurity to create a just food and farming system
Increase knowledge and awareness of food security from the grassroots to decision-makers
Advocate for policies and funding that build community food security
Increase communication and collaborations among community members, agencies and organizations to strengthen food security
Join the California Food and Justice Coalition today!
