Still MORE good news for K2!

Vitamin K2 is responsible for proper carboxylation of GLA domains on calcium binding and transporting proteins. The western diet is deficient in K2, and therefore, supplementation of K2 (along with other essential minerals and cleansing agents) can help lead to optimal soft tissue health.

MenaQ-7: Now Shown to Help Prevent Calcification in the Skin

Yet another study was published this month showing the importance of vitamin K-dependent protein called matrix GLA (MGP) in managing disorders characterized by the inappropriate deposition of calcium phosphate mineral in soft tissues.

The study investigated the levels of MGP and calcification as caused by a condition called pseudoxanthoma elasticum, a progressive disorder characterized by accumulated deposits of calcium phosphate and other minerals in elastic fibers within the connective tissues. The researchers showed that blood levels of MGP in patients with the disorder were much lower than the normal.

According to Leon Schurgers, PhD, one of the authors of the paper, “In healthy populations with vitamin K deficiency, and thus susceptible for high levels of inactive MGP, excess calcification can become a real health concern, particularly in regard to calcification of the arteries. Unfortunately, the Western diet is likely deficient in adequate vitamin K for these needs.”

Dr. Schurgers went on to state that “Due to its good bioactivity in the body, and long half life in the blood, MK-7 is the obvious choice for enrichment of dietary supplements and functional foods.”

This recent study further reinforces the importance of addressing any potential deficiency in Vitamin K2 in order to maintain optimal performance of the body’s own proteins, specifically MGP, which act to control soft tissue calcification.

Vitamin K2 should be part of everyone’s dietary supplement regimen. Per the “Rotterdam Study” which tracked over 3000 people in Europe, the effective dose is around 45 micrograms per day.

I take Calci-CLEAR AM ( a multi plus MenaQ-7, Cholecalciferol, potassium citrate, enzogenol, tumeric, and over 6 bioavailable sources of magnesium in addition to other minerals.

Good Health!
