Porn star to address Oxford Union 19 y
LONDON (Reuters) - In its 183-year history, the august Oxford Union debating society has heard the wisdom of Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan and Mother Teresa.
But until now, its members have yet to hear from anyone with quite the same resume as Ron Jeremy, star of 1,700 adult films, including ”Bang Along With Ron”.
”As far as I know it is the first porn star to address the Oxford Union. I’m 99 percent sure of that,” Peter Cardwell, spokesman for one of the English-speaking world’s most respected debating societies, told Reuters.
Jeremy, who claims to have slept with more than 4,000 women, will address the union on Wednesday, joining many British prime ministers, three U.S. presidents and political figures from the Dalai Lama to Malco ... read more
Better late than never: Man pays parking ticket more than 50 years later 19 y
FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Jack Cramer was rummaging through piles of old stuff recently when he ran across a $1 parking ticket he received while he was a college student.
Its date: July 26, 1954.
”I got a good laugh when I saw it, but then I thought, ’What if they’re still trying to collect this?’” Cramer said.
Cramer said he called the Flint Police Department’s traffic division to inform it of his find. He pledged to cover his outstanding debt.
”The lady I talked to thought it was very funny and joked that she wanted to transfer my call to the court,” he said. ”I said, ’No, someone over there might not have a sense of humour.’”
Cramer graduated in August 1954 and moved away shortly afterward. He now lives ... read more
Most Single Japanese Women Want to Stay Unmarried 19 y
TOKYO (Reuters) - Most single Japanese women prefer not to marry and believe they can live happily alone for the rest of their life, a poll showed Friday, casting another shadow on the future of a country plagued by a falling birthrate.
About seven in ten single Japanese women surveyed by the conservative Yomiuri newspaper said they would rather stay unwed.
”The result reflects a recent trend among single women who no longer attach social stigma to choosing the single life,” the daily said.
Japan’s government is struggling to stem a tumbling birthrate and keep the population from shrinking.
The country’s fertility rate -- the average number of children born to a woman during her lifetime -- fell to 1.29 in 2003, the lowest in the post-World War II period.

Don't Joke with Fish... 19 y
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) - A man who joked to friends that he would eat a fish live choked to death when the creature squirmed and lodged in his throat, police and coroner's officials said Thursday.
Police said the incident occurred when Jose Angel Torres Padilla, 22, was fishing with friends on Monday in the municipality of Dario, about 70 kilometres north of the capital.
Police said the man’s friends told them he had put the fish in his mouth, joking that he was going to eat it live. But the fish squirmed and slipped down his throat.
Benito Lindo, coroner for the provincial capital of Matagalpa, told The Associated Press by telephone that doctors conducting an autopsy had found a fish in the man’s throat.

Widow Denies Giving Husband Sherry Enema 19 y
GALVESTON, Texas - A woman who has been indicted on a charge of negligent homicide denies that she provided the alcohol that led to her husband's death from a sherry enema.
Tammy Jean Warner said Wednesday that her husband, Michael Warner, 58, not only had a longtime alcohol problem but had been addicted to enemas since he was a child.
She said that he gave himself the enema that led to his death May 21.
”There’s no way I could have gave my husband that enema, no way,” the Lake Jackson woman said during an interview at her attorney’s office.
A Brazoria County grand jury indicted her in January on a charge of negligent homicide. Prosecutors claim she provided alcohol for Warner even though she knew he’d been warned that it could ... read more
Student Puts School President on eBay 19 y
COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio State University student has put school president Karen Holbrook on the online auction site eBay, saying in the ad that she will ruin the undergraduate experience.
Bidding started at a penny on Saturday and the seven-day auction had 64 bids from 19 bidders topping out at almost $100 million Monday morning.
Timothy Rosman, a sophomore from St. Augustine, Fla., said the ad is a joke but he really doesn’t like Holbrook.
”I’m not trying to stand up and be the voice of the people. This is just a little gag between my friend and I. It just got big,” said Rosman, who uses the identification ”thatsmrbuckeye” on eBay.
Rosman, an international studies major, said in the ad that Holbrook ignores everyday crime at Ohio State, su ... read more
Too shy to voice your feelings? Let your message bloom in a bean
19 y
TOKYO (AFP) - Japanese people who are too shy to work up the courage to say "I Love You," or at least want a little surprise, have a new option: a bean plant that sprouts to read a special message.
Japan’s second largest toy maker Takara will on February 10 start nationwide marketing of the gift cans, which hold soil and the small plant bearing a message that sprouts up in about five days.
It offers six different messages, which are inscribed through a laser beam, with one side of the bean carrying words such as ”I Love You” and ”Good Luck!” and the other side a smiley face.
Known as ”Ma Mail,” a pun on the Japanese word for bean ”ma-me,” the product can be used as ”a new type of message card to convey your feelings to your loved ones,” Takara said in a statement.

Man Tries to Toss Cigarette, SUV Ignites 19 y
SAN FRANCISCO - A man barely escaped serious injury Thursday after a lit cigarette he tried to toss out the window while driving across the Bay Bridge blew back in and ignited the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The unidentified man was driving westbound at about 10:40 a.m. when he tossed the cigarette out the window of his Ford Expedition, said CHP Officer Shawn Chase.
Carried by the wind, the cigarette landed in his back seat and almost immediately burst into flames. The man quickly pulled to the side of the road, and leapt from the flame-filled SUV, which continued rolling into a guard rail, Chase said.
”He thought he had thrown it in park, but he didn’t and it just kept going,” the officer said. ”It was in flames by the time he got out. He had some of his hair singed on the back ... read more
