Hi, Willowley, yes, the nest is in my backyard, and only about 15 feet from my sliding glass door, so I can watch the comings and goings of the mother. I get a lot of hummingbirds--usually one nest a year in the yard! I've got a lot of bird-of-paradise tropicals that bloom several times a year and the sap is very sweet--the hummingbirds love it! also have bottle brush bushes that they love. I don't have to put out a feeder for them as there's enough for the birds to feed off of flowering plants.
I'm in Southern California so we get a lot of blooming on and off all year, and the weather is mild, so the birds return year after year.
The nests are very small--the opening is only about 1 and 1/2 inch in diameter and very shallow. The nests are very round, as you can see from the photos. Every year after the nest is empty I cut the nest off of the branch and keep it--have about 5 of them so far!
Hope you spot some nests! they're hard to see--usually I don't see them immediately because they're so small--in the Spring, if you see a lot of hummingbird flights back and forth over the same area, then there's usually a nest nearby!
thank you so much for writing! I hope you find nests near you!
