I don't want to discourage you, but I have to tell you the truth.
For someone who has bad eating and smoking habits and is unhealthy and has never fasted before and who has likely never read a book on fasting before, 40 days is a long time. 40 days is a long time for people who fast regularily. Anything past 30 days is potentially dangerous.
I'd hate to say it, but you're not prepared. Your best preparation is to read a book on fasting. I liked "The Miracle of Fasting" by Bragg myself. He recommends starting slow, 1 day fast per week, building up to a 3-day fast every 3 weeks, and then a 7-10 day fast every 3 months. Most people who don't read a book on fasting and don't know what to do and what to expect don't last more than a day or two at most. Which is fine, as a society North America tries to do things to fast anyway. Unfortunately, they often break their fast with binging on junk food, which will make you more fat and help give you an eating disorder.
Books on fasting will tell you that if you're unhealthy and you fast too long (sometimes as short as 4 days is enough), there is a chance you could damage your kidneys by detoxing too quickly. That's why you either have to go slow or you have to have your fast supervised.

Fasting is not a insta-fix. It's part of a lifestyle. If you're going to go back to drinking and eating junk food, you might as well not bother imo.
The two days leading up to the fast (and 2 days after the fast) you should be eating mostly fruit and some vegetables.
Fasting has many benefits and is great. However, on your first fast it's going to be hard, very hard. Just be prepared that you will likely need complete bed rest on days 2-3.
Maybe ask questions (or read her experiences) of Bella Lucia, she went on a 30-day fast but she was also vegan and did a lot of exercise.

I don't know man, I admire you for wanting to change, but it's not like one massive fast is going do it unless there are other associated changes. Do a bunch of 1 day fasts and detox a little like that and then a 3 day fast. Small victories. You'd be surprised how tough it is. And read more on other cleanses.
Good luck on it, I mean it. I'll check back and see how you did.
