Basically, Mendel's experiments showed that the full range of skin colors we see today can be made from just two parents of medium-brown skin. All skin is identical but has a variety of amounts of melanin. In other words, they're all shades of the same color.
But Darwin decided that, in spite of the science of Mendel who was his contemporary, races were separate evolutionary lines. This was the basis for justifying genocide "for the betterment of mankind" by despots such as Hitler. The more an ethnic group seemed to resemble apes, the less "evolved" they were assumed to be. Hitler saw his efforts at ridding the earth of Jews and other groups as simply evolution in practice, or at least "survival of the fittest", the law of the jungle, where the strong prey upon the weak.
If we keep telling people they are just the descendants of animals, why should we be surprised when they start acting like animals?
