I have a strong belief in the power of our dreams. Throughout the ages we as humans have marveled at this dream state. Hundreds of philosophers, scientists and mystics have dedicated their time in an attempt to explain the purpose and meaning of dreams. Some say that in our dreams we delve into our subconscious mind and work out many of the problems or issues that trouble us while we are conscious. Others have said that within the dream state we are in greater communion with God and are able to receive messages from the universe. And there are even those that believe that during our dreams we astral travel and experience distant worlds, alternate realities and parallel dimensions.
No matter what your own beliefs regarding your dreams, I think we all can agree that they are an important facet of our lives. Recently, I have been taking a greater interest in my dreams and have started to record them in a dream log. I keep this log and a pen next to my bed for easy access. No matter what time, when I have a dream and wake up I immediately record it. I have found that if I wait until the morning I either don’t recall the dream or forget important parts. So if I wake up from a dream at 3 or 4 in the morning, I grab my pen and paper and start writing. I just find it’s easier to record when it is fresh in my mind. When recording my dreams, I think about all of its important elements. A dream is not just a story. It is filled with powerful symbols and imagery and often contains strong emotions, so include all of these elements in your record. I try to leave nothing out. You’ll find just as I have that the more description you put into the dream, the easier it will be to understand its meaning or the message it is trying to relay.
Once I have recorded a dream, I break the dream down into symbols and try to find their meaning. There are many books you can buy or web sites you can find online that are dream dictionaries. If there is a certain image or symbol in your dream look to one of these sources to find out what meaning they may have. But only do this if the symbol has no meaning to you. Always rely on your own intuition and senses first before relying on anything else and even then use it as a complimentary tool not one of dependence. When you find a meaning of a symbol, see if it strikes any kind of a chord within you. If it doesn’t speak to you, keep looking.
The funny thing is that even after all this time of analyzing my own dreams and doing some dream interpretation for friends, I still overlook some of my own dreams or fail to grasp their importance. I guess this is just a part of being human. There are times when I have a dream and record it and then think oh well that had no meaning or I don’t understand what that is supposed to be or what the heck is that all about. Interestingly enough, I have found that the strength of that reaction is usually equal to my own feeling of not wanting to hear the message. A lot of times we may know what a dream is about but because we are having a hard time with the concept, we act as if we don’t. It’s precisely at these moments when you either go deeper and try and find the meaning or you ask a friend to see if they understand it. A fresh perspective can do wonders when trying to figure out dreams. Sometimes a dream that is puzzling to you may make perfect sense to a friend or someone else.
This topic came to me as I reflected on one of my own dreams from a week or so ago. In the dream I was driving in a car up in the mountains along with several friends. Eventually the car stopped in the middle of the road and all I could see around me were mountains. The next thing I knew, I could see one of the mountains out in the distance crumbling apart. Looking out of the other windows, I could see even more mountains crumbling. All of this debris seemed to be coming right at us. I yelled to the driver that it was time to get out of here as all the mountains were crumbling around us. The driver told me that this wasn’t supposed to happen until tomorrow. So I yelled back that if you don’t believe me than just look out your window. She looked out the window and we all could see the mountains crumbling. Now they were also crumbling in front of us as well. Suddenly I noticed a shower of rock above us. These rocks were coming down and hitting the car and even going through the car and through each of us.
As the driver began to take off we went along the road with the rocks belting us along the way. The road started climbing upwards. I then noticed that the rocks were no longer rocks hey were now bullets. There were snipers shooting at us with automatic weapons. As with the rocks, these bullets were going through the car and through us. When we reached the end of the road which happened to be where the snipers were, they ran off into the woods. The amazing thing was that even though the rocks and the bullets were hitting us, everyone in the car including myself was fine. We were not injured at all. Instead, we arrived safely to our destination.
The amazing part of all this is that I did not at first understand the beautiful meaning behind this dream. It wasn’t until a friend connected the dots for me that I understood. I now look upon this dream as an important message concerning my own future. There are times in our lives when we are held back by fear, but these fears are usually a misguided perception or a judgment concerning some event or circumstance. They are not necessarily the reality of the moment. In this dream I could only see the fear. It was the fear that I was going to be killed by rocks and when the rocks didn’t create enough fear then came the bullets. But the truth was that at the end of the journey those perceptions were found to be false. There was no injury and so I really had nothing to fear all along. I arrived at the end of my journey safe and secure. So it is up to us to see past the fears and know that when we go with God we are always safe and secure no matter what path or journey we choose.
As you can see, this dream is as relevant for me as it is for anyone else. Our perceptions and judgments regarding our lives, our friends and even the world around us are usually just that perceptions and judgments. They do not always reflect the reality of a situation. The best way to tell the difference is to be truthful with yourself and everyone else. As they often say, the truth shall set you free.
