In these alternative health boards we learn of many different cleanses: liver, colon, etc. But what can be done for the human heart? Surely no one can look at the history of the world, or even just its current state, and not see that there is a major disfunction deep in the human soul.
To many people, good and bad are relative terms. Good is understood to mean average. The rationale goes like this: "If you're good more often than bad you'll probably wind up in some kind of heaven. But even if you're more bad than good, God wouldn't send you to hell, so be as bad as you want and still get to heaven. If you don't murder (well, at least not people who had the good luck to reach birth), you're a good person. Even so, if you're not as good as me, you must be kind of bad."
So what results do we see on this relativistic "diet" that the whole world seems to be on? Is the world getting healthier, more moral, less criminal, safer?
Not exactly (you do know I'm understating it don't you?). Every day we hear about children who have been abducted, tortured, killed, sometimes by their own parents and for no reason. A day doesn't go by without disease, famine, war, or chants of hatred against entire nations. No, the world isn't getting better on this "true for you but not true for me" diet. It is self-destructing before our eyes.
So how can the human heart be cleansed of its relentless pursuit of evil? Most religions teach that we all just need to get possessed by a "higher intelligence". Some Christians erroneously believe that we must use political power to legislate moral living. Others think we should go to the other extreme and do nothing, not even witness. But what does the Bible say? First, let's look at the conditions:
Genesis 6:5
The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
Now the solution:
Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Acts 16
27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.
How do you do a "heart cleanse"? YOU don't; God does. All you have to do is ask.

Sometimes I wonder in the health movement what the quest for a perfect, clean body is all about? Lots of food for thought.

Actually, a lot of it is aimed at spiritual conditions. There is a lot of religion behind many alternative protocols, but even alopathic medicine is getting into the act, with things like yoga and Tai Chi (sp?). Acupuncture is also based on a belief in spiritual imbalances.
The sad thing is, no matter what beliefs people have, they seem more concerned with physical well-being than spiritual life. We guard ourselves and our kids from harmful foods and environmental factors but pay no attention to the spiritual and mental garbage they're being fed. As Jesus put it, "What good does it do to gain the whole world but lose your soul?"

You are so right on, sister....
An Ole pastor years ago told me that he had been at many death experiences, and never did he hear anyone want more, money, a bigger house, better car, super cloths, or even wish they had a better job.... Nope he said they all, everyone wished that they had been kinder to others, helped people, loved those around them more and spent more time in prayer....
This is what Eternity is made of things of the heart and GOD should be right in the middle of it all!! We (you) should ask yourself where will you spend eternity??? If you can't truly answer and/or don't really know ; we need to talk, friend... Amen!

An excellent post - yet again *applause*
Many times when we are looking for health and trying many therapies we must also remember our spiritual health while dealing with the physical.
Jesus Christ is the only way to save and cleanse a hardened, calloused heart and supply *THE* abundant life.
It's interesting really, I attended a camp meeting the other evening and the speaker was speaking on prayer. Through prayer and fellowship with Jesus Christ is the only way we will be strengthened and softened and while the softening takes place the wicked ways dissipate.
God knows that the only way we will be free is if we surrender to him. We don't get freedom in Christ from being forced to surrender, but when we willing surrender our hearts and souls to him - that is the plan, and why He created us this way.
