Brazil Nuts for Mercury Chelation
While researching chelation methods someone suggested taking cilantro and chlorella to chelate heavy metal and that a selenium, zinc, and magnesium supplement should also be taken to replesnish the body of these minerals that will be chelated out of the body along with mercury and lead, through the chelation process. Brazil Nuts contain one the highest amounts of selenium and magnesium in a food and Brazil nuts also contain zinc. This seems like a perfect food for helping the body recover minerals though the chelation process.
What are the benefits of taking selenium?
Flushes heavy metals - Together with glutathione peroxidase, selenium acts by binding with toxic heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium through a process called chelation and flushing them out of the body through urine.

Selenium is found in foods such as Brazil nuts, walnuts, organ meats, seafood, brewer's yeast, wheat germ and vegetables such as broccoli, mushrooms, cabbage, onions and garlic. If these foods are part of your diet, you can be assured that you are not missing out on the benefits of selenium.
Brazil Nuts
These are the very meaty and high-fat hard-shelled seeds... Brazil nuts are a good-quality protein, yet are also about two-thirds fat, of which over 20 percent is saturated. The oil from this nut turns rancid easily and is not used commercially.
Brazil nuts are known to be rich in calcium, as well as magnesium, manganese, copper, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium. Zinc and iron are also found in good proportions in this high-mineral nut.

Selenium is powerful free radical scavenger.
Brazil nuts have been classified as the foodstuffs that contain the highest level of unadulterated selenium, an essential trace element that appears to prevent cancer.

Brazil nuts have been classified as the foodstuffs that contain the highest level of unadulterated selenium, an essential trace element that appears to prevent cancer. To date, characterization of the selenium species in brazil nuts has not yet been investigated. In this work, various sample preparation approaches, including microwave extractions and enzymatic treatments, are examined with the goal of species preservation and subsequent selenium speciation; of these approaches, an enzymatic treatment with Proteinase K proved most effective. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation strategies and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection schemes will also be presented. Extracts are evaluated against available standards for the commercially obtainable seleno-amino acids, selenomethionine (SeMet), selenoethionine (SeEt), and selenocystine (SeCys); selenomethionine was demonstrated to be the most abundant of these seleno-amino acids. Further characterization of unidentified selenium-containing peaks is attempted by the employment of several procedures, including electrospray-mass spectrometry (ES-MS). A peptide structure was identified; however, this was considered a tentative proposal due to the large background produced by the extremely complicated brazil nut matrix.

Emmy winning actor Jeremy Piven was getting serious amounts of cash for his appearance in a Broadway play, "Speed the Plow," by David Mamet. He had to leave the production due to a high mercury count in his system. The director has called the ailment, which can actually turn deadly, bogus, despite orders from a doctor (acting/directing schools typically do not have an MD program) to stop working and seek treatment immediately. Mercury, though almost always present in trace levels in the human body, is a very toxic element and it has deadly side effects from exposure to even small amounts. If you want to find out what would cause Jeremy Piven to turn down so much extra cash, check out this article.

I've never been a big fan of Brazil nuts. I'll eat 'em... but I just don't care for them very much. However... I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that it's easy to make a good selenium broth using onions and garlic... and including the skins. There are LOTS of minerals in the stuff we often throw in the garbage or heap in the compost bins! And I DO like soup!
