Lifelong vegetarian reaches 103
In 1905 Einstein published his theories on relativity, the Russian revolution began, and Blanche Mannix was born. Canadian-born Blanche turned an incredible 103-years-old yesterday and enjoyed celebrating the special occasion with close friends.
Blanche lives in Old Town's Avenue Court and is as independent as people half her age, regularly walking into town with the aid of a stick and even shopping for herself.
Born in Moose Jaw, Canada and raised in Winnipeg, a young Blanche lived in a log cabin with her sister, alongside native Indians who made jewellery for her in return for baked bread.
She moved to Britain aged 32 but is very proud of her roots and puts her longevity down to her meat-free diet.
"I am a life-long vegetarian and have never been interested in meat," said Blanche.
"I have lived 103 years on vegetables so I don't think I've done bad.
Dr. Cinque's comments: She really looks fabulous, but I wish the article gave more information about what she has eaten in her life. It's interesting that she was born and raised outside of Winnipeg, Canada, and that doesn't sound like a mecca for vegetarians. The only foods she mentioned were vegetables and baked bread. However, I wonder if she ate dairy products and/or eggs. But, if she's walking into town at 103, she's doing better than most centenarians. This article stood out to me because we don't often hear about vegetarians topping 100. So, I am very glad to hear that someone has done it, and going forward, I'm sure there are going to be a lot more vegetarian centenarians to come.
