Do You Dare to be Outbreak Free?

It has been said that often what you get in life is what you expect to get. This is the root cause of why for example so many people who are born in poverty die in poverty, or why someone who has failed several times to quit a bad habit has a hard time believing that he or she can succeed the next time. Certainly the past doesn’t equal the future- sounds reasonable enough on paper. But whom am I trying to kid? We are emotional creatures and logic often cannot stand a challenge from deeply embedded feelings.

I see this challenge affecting many of my herpes patients and it affected me for many years too. In the film “The Shawshank Redemption” there was an older prisoner who had been in jail his whole life. When he was finally paroled he was petrified of the outside world and even tried to get himself re-admitted to prison. Finally he hung himself. The character played by Tim Robbins asked why this happened and Morgan Freeman’s character replied that it was “institutionalization”.

Anytime you get used to a certain series of events occouring whether it be the daily routine in prison or regular herpes outbreaks your mind becomes convinced of the certainty of those events repeating themselves. One of the hardest things to do in the world of human behaviour is to break the pattern of these expectations. It takes a lot of imagination and daring.

To be free of outbreaks one has to believe in a future without outbreaks. One has to see it, feel it, believe it. It has to be an unshakeable conviction because your mind knows when you are just going through the motions.

It’s hard to be convinced that outbreaks don’t have to be part of the experience of a life-long herpes infection- but it’s not impossible.

One approach that I know can work is what I call “incrementalism” or taking “baby-steps”. You may not be able to get to your goal in giant strides, but you can get there one tiny step at a time. If you are having outbreaks every month if you can manage to go one month without an outbreak that is a step in the right direction and a confidence builder, then make a two month reprieve from outbreaks happen, then try for three. Even if you have an outbreak after two or three months, don’t despair you are making progress and you can build on this. If you persist and don’t fall into despair with a set-back soon you will be going longer and longer periods of time without outbreaks.

In manifesting a different future for yourself it’s important to have the full support of your lover. One of the biggest obstacles to imagining an outbreak free future is the fear of giving herpes to your partner. Please do treat your herpes and please do practice safer sex with a condom/dental dam and an anti-viral gel, this will ease your mind, but it’s not enough. I stopped having outbreaks when my girlfriend at the time told me that she wasn’t afraid of getting herpes from me. This powerful declaration set me free.

I was no longer anxious when we were having sex. I never had an outbreak in the time we were together and have only had three in the past seven years, with only one in the past three years despite having a very busy and demanding holistic viral practice which often leaves me with no sleep and little time to eat on a regular schedule. If you have a partner who is very nervous about getting herpes from you, you may want to consider getting another partner or finding a way of addressing your partner’s fears because the anxiety from a fearful partner and your own fear of infecting an uninfected person will often be enough to keep the cycle of outbreaks happening.

The last piece of advice I have to offer in this note is to stop seeing yourself as a victim. You are a human being. You have power. Use your power. You can reprogramme your mind. You can change your expectations. You can make a peaceful accommodation with the herpes virus and ask it to stay dormant. You can holistically manage your herpes with diet, holistic stress management and herbal medicine or drug therapy. You can practice safer sex to protect your lover/s and yourself.

In fact you can do almost anything you believe you can. What a human being can do is almost unlimited. What most people choose to do is disappointing. Choose differently. Dare to live outbreak free.
