Natural Therapies for Prostate Problems
Grady A Deal, Ph.D., D.C.
September 11, 1999
Each year, 200,000 American men get a diagnosis of prostate cancer and 38,000 die of the disease. Their prostates are surgically removed or burned with radiation or microwaves, usually within the first 48 hours of cancer diagnosis. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the second most frequent cause of cancer death in males. The standard orthodox medical treatment of surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy and drugs has limited effectiveness and cause impotence and incontinence in about 80% of cases. The cancer returns with 35% requiring repeat treatment within five years and 75% within 10 years.
Prostate cancer can begin with chronic infection called prostatitis and non-cancerous chronic enlargement known as benign prostatic hypertrophy. The person usually doesn't know he has prostate cancer at first because in its early stages it produces no symptoms or only very minor ones that can easily be overlooked. The early symptoms of prostate cancer are very similar to those of benign prostate hypertrophy, including getting up repeatedly at night to urinate, urinating frequently, but often only in small amounts, increased urgency to urinate, waiting longer for the urine flow to begin, a urinary stream that starts and stops, scrotal discomfort and pain, urinary incontinence, pain following defecation, pain during sex, and erection difficulties. Having these symptoms does not mean that you have prostate cancer but if you have these or other symptoms, get yourself checked by a holistic nutritionally oriented medical doctor.
The prostate is shaped like a chestnut and is located under the bladder. It is wrapped around the urethra (urinary canal). It functions to add a lubricating fluid to the sperm before ejection during sex. Problems with the prostate cause inflammation and obstruction of the urinary canal
The primary causes of prostate problems including prostate cancer may be high levels of estrogen (Cancer, vol. 10, 1957), low levels of testosterone (J Clin. Endoc. Metab 1997) and conversion of testosterone to the DHT (Braeckman, 1994, J. Endocrin., 1976). These hormonal imbalances are caused by a deficiency of dietary vegetable sterols, unhealthy diet (especially, milk, cheese, ice cream, chocolate and polyunsaturated vegetable oils and hydrogenated vegetable oils, such as margarine), coffee, beer, wine and alcohol, not drinking 2 to 3 quarts of water daily, cigarettes, street drugs, medical drugs, emotional distress, muscle tension, wearing tight clothes, stress, family history, radiation, exposure to cadmium and other toxic environmental metals and chemicals, too little sex, unhealthy lifestyle, and exposure to various toxins found in the mercury in your tooth fillings, fluoride, chemicalized processed foods, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
All these common causes of prostate disorders lead to hormonal imbalance, toxicity, lymph node congestion, prostate inflammation, swelling, infection, enlargement, calcification, restriction of the flow of blood and oxygen to the prostate, obstruction and eventually possible prostate cancer. Infected prostatic fluid within tiny sacs of the acini becomes increasingly thicker in consistency and eventually calcifies and obstructs the main ejaculatory ducts resulting in accumulation of infected prostatic fluid that must be drained by prostatic massage.
Dietary fat is a recognized cause of breast, colon and prostate cancer as outlined in a 1982 National Research Council report. Orthodoxy will admit that too much oil and fat will clog the prostate but will not recommend that you stop eating the wrong kinds of oil and fat (margarine, other hydrogenated oils, fried foods, polyunsaturated vegetable oils, especially canola oil) and will not tell you that the right kind of oils (extra virgin olive, butter, coconut, sesame, flax) will improve blood circulation and normal drainage of the prostate.
Take natural d-alpha (not dl-alpha) vitamin E 400 iu, 1 capsule of cod liver oil, 1 capsule of flax seed oil, and 2 capsules of lecithin oil capsules daily to improve oil and fat metabolism, minimize oxidation and increase blood flow in the prostate and all parts of the body. The best way to ingest healthy oils is to eat raw whole nuts and seeds daily.
Milk, cheese, ice-cream and other dairy foods are some of the worst foods that you can possibly eat and consequently cause most of the health problems in the U.S. today, including toxicity, allergy reactions, congestion, calcification, blockage, infection and enlargement of the prostate. The casein protein in dairy that holds cheese together is like eating cement. This casein glue is even added to numerous foods to hold them together and even added to "health" protein drinks If you want to plug up your prostate, eat lots of dairy, cheese and casein products.
Beta-sitosterol extract found in extracts of saw palmetto, well as pygeum, stinging nettle, and pumpkinseeds support good prostate health primarily by maintaining healthy male hormone balance. Two to three times a day, take 2 capsules of Uro-Pro Beta-sitosterol 210 mg with zinc for acute prostate problems and only 2 capsules daily for daily maintenance. These highly concentrated herb extracts contain many times more active Beta-sitosterols than the ordinary unprocessed herb itself. If the label does not say "extract." do not buy it and beware of unethical mislabeling by companies that sell extracts containing little or no beta-sitosterol.
Studies show that natural beta-sitosterol extracts are more effective than Proscar but without the side effects, one of which is that Proscar masks the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test used to diagnose and monitor progress of treatment of prostate disorders. Natural beta-sitosterol does not mask this important PSA test.
Hormonal imbalance and the role of beta-sitosterol bear a more detailed and careful examination Since self-treatment with over the counter hormones can possibly aggravate or cause prostate cancer, consult a HOLISTIC medical doctor with expert knowledge. Your establishment endocrinologist or medical doctor, no doubt, will claim to be an expert in hormone balance, but I personally would not place myself in the hands of orthodox medical doctors, who are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, namely doctor-caused iatrogenic death caused by "approved" orthodox surgery radiation and drugs.
For treatment of prostate disease, find a good holistic medical doctor with a good comprehensive program of nutrition, detoxification and hormonal balancing. He may also provide hydrogen peroxide, ozone and ultra-violet therapy. If necessary, he will do a rectal exam of the prostate and perform prostatic drainage massage to drain the prostate and possibly do a culture of the resulting expressed secretions to identify a specific antibiotic, if needed. He will do the PSA test, and if elevated and he also finds other suspicious test results, he may recommend ultrasound diagnosis of the prostate in place of biopsy because biopsy can spread any existing cancer.
Dr. Antonio Novak Feliciano, MD, director of the Prostate Treatment Center in the Philippines (http://webcom.net/-ino/) provides the details of learning prostate drainage massage at home as follows: See insert.
Obesity, lack of exercise and a high fat diet, including the extremely unhealthy polyunsaturated vegetable oils and margarine, raise estrogen levels in men (Cancer Research vol. 42 1982). Estrogens (and DHT) increase as men age while human growth hormone, testosterone, pregnenolone, androstenedione, melatonin and progesterone significantly decrease (Prostate, vol. 28, 1996). Estrogens, especially estradiol, cause benign prostatic hypertrophy (Prostate, vol. 26, 1995; Preventative Medicine, vol. 19, 1990; Int. Rev Exp. Pathology, vol. 23, 1982). Beta-sitosterol effectively counters estradiol estrogen (J. Phar. Research, vol. 34. 1996).
Progesterone, the opposite of estrogen is the natural way to counteract the dangerous effects of estrogen and does not cause feminization in men. There are progesterone receptors in the prostate gland (J. Steroid Biochem. vol. 18, 1983) and animal studies show that progesterone shrinks the prostate Progesterone inhibits 5-alpha-reductase and prevents binding of DHT to prostate tissue.
Dr. John Lee, a leading proponent of natural progesterone therapy, has found that progesterone cream decreases prostate enlargement. Find a good, natural USP transdermal, progesterone cream, 800 or more milligrams per two ounce jar. Avoid any wild yam creams as these contain no progesterone at all and do not precurse into progesterone. Mix 2 ounces of progesterone cream with 4 ounces of any good skin lotion or body cream and use 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture a day or use 1/8 teaspoon every day of undiluted cream. Apply daily directly on the scrotum where it is absorbed directly into the blood
The popular myth that high testosterone levels cause prostate problems is untrue. Low testosterone is correlated with benign prostatic hypertrophy. (J Clin. Endoc. Metao, vol. 82, 1997) The problem is not high testosterone but enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, that converts testosterone to its harmful form, DHT, which is the central cause of prostate illness. In men with benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer, autopsy found the prostate gland contained about 500% more DHT than blood levels of DHT (J Endocrin , vol. 71, 1976)
Over the counter hormone therapy has become a popular big business but caution is recommended. To avoid serious side effects, men should not make the mistake of taking testosterone supplements to treat prostate or impotence. Fortunately, androstenedione is the direct precursor to testosterone. According to Roger Mason (1998), taking a low dosage of androstenedione, 50 mg daily, can safely and effectively raise testosterone levels. Also, keep in mind that beta-sitosterol inhibits conversion of good testosterone to harmful DHT.
Taking human growth hormone (HGH) is enormously popular these days but it is expensive and may aggravate any pre-existing prostate or other cancer. If you want to enjoy the many anti-aging benefits of human growth hormone, it is far safer to raise its levels by taking L-glutamine, 1 gram twice a day. L-glutamine is especially effective for the functioning and vitality of the intestinal tract.
Your holistic medical doctor may also recommend low doses of DHEA, 25 mg, and pregnenolone, 50 mg, because they are, respectively, the "parent" and "grandparent," of all hormones, they decline with age and, according to Mason, they can be used safely at these low dosages.
As with all hormone therapy and any treatment of prostate enlargement or cancer, consult a holistic medical doctor, show him a copy of my article and allow him to make all decisions about what is best for you. This article is for education only and should not be used to treat disease or as a substitute for medical treatment.
Unlike orthodox medical doctors who prescribe full spectrum antibiotics with no prior lab testing, holistic medical doctors first give the patient a prostate massage to collect an expressed prostatic secretion (EPS), to order a 7-day microbiological culture of your EPS, to identify the specific germ, and then prescribe a specific antibiotic for that particular bacterium. The EPS is the fluid your doctor can push out of your prostate gland using a gloved finger inserted in your rectum to see what kind of germs are causing the infection.
The initial use of antibiotics for prostate infection can be effective but the infection usually returns in short order and as the disease progresses, antibiotics are less effective as a result of increasing degeneration of the prostate. Over time the germs become partially or completely immune and resistant to antibiotics. Since germs tend to hide in the tiny sac acini of the prostate where the antibiotics can not reach them, prostatic drainage massage must be used. Prostate massage pushes out the infection so that the antibiotic can easily reach and exterminate the harmful infection. Note that along with antibiotics, your holistic medical doctor may also prescribe Diflucan to prevent secondary candidiasis infection.
If infection exists but antibiotics are not necessary for the time being or have become ineffective, your holistic medical doctor may try broad spectrum, natural, herbal antibiotic extracts, such as mushroom, olive leaf, grapefruit seed and garlic.
Ask your holistic medical doctor to call Dr. Bernard Bihari, M.D. for a consultation in New York at (212) 929-4196 regarding Naltrexone. Dr. Man claims that this non-toxic 3 mg prescription drug taken in the evening has promise for treating cancer of the prostate, rectum, colon, small intestine, pancreas, malignant melanoma, multiple melanoma, lymphoma, lymphocytic leukemia, neuroblastoma and some endocrine gland cancers. Dr Bihari says two cases of prostate cancer treated with this drug responded with a 50% tumor reduction in the first few months of treatment. Naltrexone activates the immune system by increasing the body's production of beta and metenkephalin endorphins and by increasing activity of killer cells. Endorphins slow down the growth of some cancers by filling their opiate receptors. As Naltrexone normally comes in 50 mg tablets, your doctor can order recompounded 3 mg capsules from Apothecure Pharmacy (800) 969-6601 or Smith Pharmacy (603) 5392020.
Take up to 3.000 mg IP6, a natural component of grains, found to kill cancer cells, shrink tumors, and boost your immune system. Dr. AbulKalam Shamsuddin reports that IP6 cuts the rate of cancer cell division in half, normalizes cell division and up-regulates the product of the P53 gene, one of the body's most powerful tumor-suppressor genes.
Take two collinsonia roots, 300mg daily, for maintenance and two, twice a day, for acute conditions because collinsonia has the remarkable ability to shrink inflamed blood vessels in the prostate and also in rectal hemorrhoids and phlebitis (inflammation of blood vessels in the legs).
Take the following antioxidants, glutathione mg, along with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), 200 mg, and vitamin C, 3000 mg daily, to help detoxify the body. Along with these supplements, take alpha-lipoic acid, 200 mg daily, to help raise levels of glutathione. Note that lipoic is also very beneficial for diabetes.
Also take Co Q10 75 mg, zinc 30 mg and selenium 200 mcg daily to enhance the immune system.
Shitake and reishi mushroom extracts have been found to have anti-tumor and anticancer protective qualities. Kelp and seaweed are also anticancer agents.
Antitumor and anticancer properties also have been studied in mushrooms.
Take beta-carotene 25,000 iu, bioflavonoid complex 1,000 to 3,000 mg and grape seed extract 200 mg daily as a good source of powerful antioxidants.
An effective natural therapy for prostate congestion is a combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching exercises and lymph drainage massage of the low back and pelvic area as well as detoxifying the blood to encourage increased blood, nerve and lymph supply to the prostate.
Around 1985, I first coined the term "toxic kidney-low back pain syndrome" that explains how dairy, chocolate, coffee, beer, alcohol, cigarettes and an unhealthy lifestyle, in general, poisons the blood and the kidneys. The kidneys day in and day out over the years clean up the toxic blood and release the toxins via urination but pay the price of increasing kidney, bladder and prostate congestion and inflammation. Over an extended time, this degenerative process, in turn, inflames and spasms the kidney muscles called the iliopsoas that along with the pectineus muscles surround the prostate. The resulting chronic muscle tension and spasms of these muscles constrict, irritate, congest and inflame the prostate. A series of chiropractic adjustments and deep massage of the iliopsoas, pectineus and surrounding muscles has been found to improve circulation, relax the area and decrease many of the common symptoms of prostate problems.
"Prostate illness is neither inevitable nor incurable;" says Larry Clapp, Ph.D., J.D., author of Prostate Health in 90 Days. "We've all been led to believe that benign prostate enlargement and cancer are a normal part of aging, like wrinkles and gray hair, and that we should expect these things to happen But it's not necessary. Prostate illness -- including cancer-can not only be avoided, it can be cured."
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1990, attorney Larry Clapp is now cancer free today thanks to his rejection of orthodox surgery and radiation and his option instead to research and embrace natural cleansing, detoxification, nutrition, massage, herbs and other alternative therapies, as outlined in his book
