As with all viruses people can just be carriers of them without getting sick from them as was the case with my girlfriend. Some researchers have said that the reason some people like myself get chronically sick with viruses is an immune system that is deficient in natural killer cells. So we can get colds and flu easily but other than that live fairly normal till something like Epstein Barr Virus or XMRV infects us.
