Intestinal Formulas - miserable 2 weeks! Alternatives please?

Ok, so hubby and I just finished Dr Schulze's IF#1 with IF#2 (the #1 preceded #2 by about a week before we added #2). Honestly, the most miserable time either of us can remember in quite a while. I had a lot of diarrhea with many unproductive visits to the toilet, with a few daily that were productive, but not probably by someone else's standards. Mostly it was very watery, and many false alarms that sent me running to the toilet, often to discover it was only gas (but I was unwilling to test that theory, not wanting a nasty clean up on aisle 5)! As for hubby, his was less watery, but still many trips to the john. Cramps were high on the list of fun for the whole event as well, often causing us to double over in pain. Taking that many pills and that much water at once so many times a day was certainly not high on the list of fun either. Couple all that with only about 2 pounds of weight loss - grrrr! Now grant, we did not change our diet, but we eat pretty nutritiously, get a fair amount of fiber, and a decent, but not huge amount of fruits and veggies. Desert after dinner, but nothing huge there either. We learned after the first day - take the #1 pills right after breakfast not dinner - otherwise sleep was a distant memory as we spent a lot of our sleep time going to the john. Overall - a very unpleasant experience for us both. The stuff you take to clean out prior to a colonoscopy was not even as bad - at least that is only one miserable day! So, even though I think a lot of Dr S and his products, I doubt we will ever get these products again. Now to the purpose of this post - what else is a good option with much less "aggravation" for someone who just doesn't go regularly? Hubby already does well with that on his own, but I quite often don't even go daily, much less 2-3 times a day as I should. I am open to other suggestions since I don't really feel that this program really cleaned out all the old "collection" I've been saving for a rainy day. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful suggestions.
