some thoughts about rawfood and money

Date:   7/22/2006 12:08:20 PM ( 18 y ago)

I am writing about a sensitive issue facing many people and is the primary point of contention facing married couples. The issue is money. How does this impact someone like me who is trying to remake their life in terms of raw food? When I worked in an urban healthfood store, the frequent complaint (excuses really!) is that eating healthy, eating raw is expensive. Exercising is expensive because you need a hitech gym to workout in. I worked in a very diverse and changing neighborhood, primarily black Americans and hispanic immigrants, legal and otherwise. Im only pointing out the illegal issue because many of our spanish speaking friends in that state put healthy living faaaar on the back burner. Sending money home is first on the list. That is why you see so many bodegas serving chicharones and money transfers instead of healthfood stores where I used to live. Ive now seen two sides of the same coin and I know that rural white people and urban black people who are lower middle classs can both benefit from raw food and healthy exercise. Poor" people live in the state of here and now, that is a state of financial emergency.

Here where I live the people are very ethnic people of German and some Slavic stock. The women are not as fat as some of the ladies on Long Island. I attribute that to the rich persons diseases, or the wannabe rich persons diseases. The old men hunt their meat and as such the meat is in a healthier state than something that has sat on the shelf at Walmart. There is no healthfood store here except for a GNC which Ive never considered to be a healthfood store by any stretch of the imigination." The Walmart grocery store has more organic than I recall when I visited here before the marriage. Yet, there isnt a consciousness oriented towards things like juicing, colonics, etc. I dont see this being different than the old neighborhood. There arent a lot of places to go for entertainment so oen must resist the temptation to watch television. Even if you eat good food, inactivity will make you unhealthy.

Anyway, I have these thoughts because I find myself without money in my newly married state. I know that I am NOT poor in the way that my mother and my husbands mother were poor. They were REAL poor. Theres no such thing as poverty in the USA. People who come from the Caribbean and Eastern Europe like my husband have known the depths of real poverty.

Yesterday, I bought some vine ripe tomatoes at the BiLo for $3.50, five tomatoes for three dollars. I know that a packet of heirloom tomato seeds can be had for less than two dollars here. It irritated me that I bought the tomatoes because I had thirty nine dollars to buy groceries that need to last for half a week. So...Im glad I bought a book called Square Foot Gardening with a giftcard someone got for me. This system of gardening is amazing and Ill be able to have greens well into the fall season.

You can get this book at the library. I plan to blog about this issue regularly. I do believe that living the wonderful life can be simple without sacrificing fun and taste. I dont believe in being frugal to the point of living like a refugee. Some of these frugal websites are truly of a negative spirit. I do intend to develop a prosperity consciousness about being able to live the good life, the healthy life.
