Militarism - Media and the Public Mind
(Path of my Life)

Militarism - Media and the Public Mind by Karlin .....

Militarism is a state of mind now in North America

Date:   8/24/2007 12:57:32 PM ( 17 y ago)

The flag-draped coffins, the honour and the glory, my useless life could have meaning there oh boy! Thats the message our youth are getting from the mass media lately.

When media parades the military code but neglects to show the suffering, the indignities, or the grief of families and friends when soldiers are injured, it creates a false impression on impressionable minds.

It is a form of recruitment, or at least enticement, for our youth. Instead of going to school or becoming a worker in a dull job, they could just join the army and give their lives some meaning. There is no comparable activity in all the human world that matches up to "going to war". The increasingly difficult lives of working people adds to the enticing idea of joining the army where everything is laid out and certain, no decisions to make, no responsibilities other than to obey what they tell you to do. Army life is horrific, not a panacea, but we do not see that horrific side much, and when we do it is turned into honour and glory.

Militarism is a state of mind, and it is spreading to all parts of our nations in Canada and the USA. Canada especially is changing due to this kind of coverage, we have never had such involvement, not since WW2, in war mentality.

All this is going on at a time when the clear majority of Canadians are firmly against the "war on terror". The media is helping that minority of 'hawks' establish a militaristic attitude in our youth.

Its not right, its not balanced journalism. It is recruitment that appeals to a false sence of excitement and purpose that belonging to the army promises. Wait until they lose a limb and find little help when they return home... its not a thrill, its a lie.
