Reuters - 1 hour 20 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - Religious education (RE) fails to meet modern-day needs because it is still centered around ethics instead of reflecting a changing world, the schools inspector Ofsted said.

More pupils are studying RE and leaving school with better results at GCSE and A-level, it added.

But mechanized teaching methods and out-of-date syllabuses mean schoolchildren are not being stretched and are not exploring the changing political and social significance of religion in the modern world.

Ofsted's Director of Education, Miriam Rosen, said: "Recent world events, the rise of more fundamentalist forms of religion, the growth of faith schools and the debate about the relationship between religion and British identity have given a new impetus and urgency to RE.

"The improvements in RE over the last few years are to be welcomed but more needs to be done if the subject is to develop in students a more profound understanding of the significance of religious commitment and diversity and its impact on society."

Ofsted put the lack of adaptability down to the fact that the subject is outside the National Curriculum.

Its report, "Making sense of religion", said pupils learn to pass the examination, but the current focus on ethical or philosophical issues needs to be complemented by consideration of questions about the social role of religion.

The problem was worse in secondary schools, it said, and welcomed the Religious Education Council for England and Wales' proposals for a national strategy for RE.
