(Southern Etiquette or life in Dixie)

Updated & Interesting facts on the War between the States... by kerminator .....

It has shaped us and paved the way to the United States developed... What we are now was forged from this great conflict!!

Date:   2/21/2006 4:48:53 PM ( 18 y ago)

We will discuss some more interesting but seldom discussed facts about the resent period of conflict between ourselves....

Many of the curses and problems we see in the society are a direct result of that time period...  Examples:

1) The Union Army started, the mass use of Morphine, as a pain control for the troops... This led to literally thousands of drug addicts after the war, and started on a large scale the so called dope dealing, we see today...

2) The Confederate Navy, destroyed for all practical purposes the U.S. Whale Oil fleet... That with the development of the modern oil drilling, by Mr. Drake in Pennsylvania in 1858...  Put us on the Petro oil train we ride today....

3) Slavery was not the real reason for the war, rather it was just a excuse to bend the power of the Southland....  Slavery was becoming uneconomical, and unpopular...  The modern farm machinery would replace most humans on large plantations.....  The key to the war was the overall expansion of the Industrial Develpoment....  The Industrial North...  Big business... began expansion, which continues today...  Read the economic papers...  So it continues today...

4) POW and prison camps were a result of the war effort...  The first part of the war, most of the troops were exchanged or swapped...  But in 1864 General Grant; felt that the South would be hard pressed to keep troops in the field, if the Union did not exchange them...  The Union had over five times the manpower, and resources; so they could afford to lose troops, both in battle loses and as prisoners...   There were many large Prison camps, both in the north and south...  But you only hear about Anderson ville, Ga....  The problem in the South later in the war was that, supplies were difficult if not impossible to get, there was an ever constricting blockade and this effected the poor Union Troops held by the South...   They would have been better off exchanged...   The North had several Prison camps, like Sandusky, Ohio, Elmira, NY and others...

5) In the Army of Northern Virginia alone, there were revivles...  That is where the troops responded to the message of the Chaplin's, and ministers...  During 1863 & 1864 over 15000 men were saved in the Army Of Northern Virginia, under General Robert E. Lee...   Similar events occurred in other armies, during the war...

6) Modern weapons, were employed, in great quanity...  The steel war ships, power ships, aerial observation, mass troop movements, mass produced munitions...  The machine gun, semi auto firearms, mines, grenades, and troperdos...   Wonderful stuff...

7) The Income tax was started, as well as the military draft...  Two rather nice government programs....

8) There were some people in the Southland that did not support the Condfederacy...  Examples: The Union Army had a Calvary unit the 1st Alabama Calvary, and there were some others on both sides... HUH!!

9) There were not only Negro / Black in positions as slaves, read an excellent book on this; " The Lost German Slave Girl", by John Baily; Grove Press, NY, NY...

10) The so called "Reconstruction" after the war; was an effort by the Yankee Big Business to control and dominate the south...  It is still happening very much today, as the North is moving South...

This is just some of the events that were a result of that war... That carry over into the United States today...  Plus over 600,000 men died, that is more than all the other wars the US has ever fought in put together....

Something about, Read your history, and economics books... Don't forget the victors always write most of the history books...  So look good; it is all there. HUH!!

Thanks for you interest, now think about how history effects you each and every day...  Though you might want to know..... This and all that has gone on before...

See Ya... K
