Hi Leslie,

Dear friends,

SB1056 passed the Assembly floor yesterday and is now moving to the Senate, where it must be voted on by next Thursday. Time is short, and we have every hope that we can win this in the Senate ˆ please take some time to help!

For those of you who are new to the list, SB1056 is a preemption bill that, if passed, would prohibit counties and cities from passing any laws pertaining to seeds and nursery stock, including genetically engineered seeds. The state government currently has no regulations for genetic engineering in agriculture so this bill preempts to nothing. Denying local governments the right to pass laws, especially when there are no state regulations, is unconstitutional and undemocratic.

Even though we lost in the final count (51 yes, 24 no), we were happily surprised by the support we received in the Assembly. Members who voted with us were: Karen Bass, Patty Berg, Wilma Chan, Judy Chu, Joe Coto, Hector De la Torre, Noreen Evans, Jackie Goldberg, Loni Hancock, Dave Jones, Johan Klehs, Paul Koretz, John Laird, Mark Leno, Lloyd Levine, Sally Lieber, Ted Lieu, Cindy Montanez, Joe Nation, Pedro Nava, Fran Pavley, Ira Ruskin, Lori Saldana and Lois Wolk.

This is certainly thanks to all the constituent pressure that you have brought to bear in the past months as well the hard work of the coalition and our allies who have spent many days in the capitol informing legislators about this bill and drumming up opposition. If your Assemblymember voted Œno‚ on SB1056, please call or write and thank them for their support on this very important issue!

Take Action! Join us in stopping this bill once and for all in the Senate - call your Senator and urge their NO vote on SB1056 (sample phone rap below). To find out your Senator‚s contact information go to: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sample phone rap for Senators:
Hi, my name is ___________, and I am a constituent. I live in __________. I am very concerned with SB 1056, introduced by Senator Florez. This bill would take away the rights of local governments to pass policies regulating seeds, including restrictions on genetically engineered seeds. California has no laws pertaining to genetically engineered seeds. In the absence of state regulations, citizens and local governments must retain the right to work together to pass local policies. Therefore I am strongly opposed to this bill. Thank you.
