India offers some of the best treatment options for blood cancers. India's National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been ranked among the top three cancer centers globally by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, NCI has received international accreditation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Nuclear Medicine Society of North America (NMSNA), and the American College of Radiology (ACR). These accreditations attest to the high standards of care at NCI.
The Indian government has taken several steps to improve access to quality healthcare. As a result, the country now boasts of over 500 medical colleges, including many private institutions.
Treatment Options Available at NCI
At NCI, patients have access to state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplantation, stem cell transplants, targeted therapies, and various supportive measures.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. At NCI, chemotherapy regimens are tailored to each patient's individual condition. Patients receive a combination of drugs based on their diagnosis and stage of disease. Chemotherapy may be administered intravenously, orally, or intraperitoneally.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy involves the use of x-rays or gamma rays to destroy cancerous tumors. Radiation therapy is often combined with surgery or chemotherapy. At NCI, radiation therapy is delivered using linear accelerators, brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, proton beam therapy, and neutron capture therapy.
Bone Marrow Transplantation
Bone marrow transplantation is used to treat certain types of leukemia and lymphoma. Bone marrow transplantation involves replacing diseased bone marrow with healthy donor bone marrow.
Stem Cell Transplants
Stem cell transplants involve the infusion of stem cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood, or amniotic fluid. Stem cells are immature cells that have the potential to develop into any type of body cell. Stem cell transplants are used to treat a variety of blood disorders, including myelodysplastic syndrome, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and severe aplastic anemia.
Targeted Therapies
Targeted therapies are designed to target specific cancer genes and pathways. There are currently two classes of targeted therapies approved for use in India: tyrosine kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies.
