Home. It's where you go to relax, to connect with your family and to be yourself. In a perfect world, stress would never make its way into your home and every minute spent there would be bliss. Unfortunately, this isn't how life works. Everything that happens each day inside and outside of the home can contribute to stress, whether it's related to finances, school, work, relationships or health.

Even though these things are unavoidable, it's also possible to cut down on the stress they can cause by making adjustments here and there. Here are three tips for getting started.

1. Get Finances in Order

There's no doubt that financial stress is one of the worst kinds. It can be the elephant in the room; what's keeping you awake at night and the root cause of relationship troubles. And while a lot of your personal situation will depend on your income, family size, debt and spending habits, you can still make changes to make it all more manageable.

This might look like researching more affordable home insurance quotes, cutting expenses, or embarking on a rigorous debt repayment program. While it's true that every little bit will make a difference, sticking with it is what will yield results.

This is also a good time to evaluate your spending habits and check in with your budget. Be sure to do this with your spouse to make sure you're on the same page. Remember that you don't need to be a millionaire to live with less financial stress. Learning to work best with what you have is all that's needed.

2. Clear Your Calendar

When you look at your calendar, do you feel overwhelmed? Do you feel suffocated by the lack of free space? If this sounds familiar, now's a good time to make some lifestyle changes.

While it's not realistic to live with a totally clear calendar, there are times when it's necessary. Being on the go without any downtime is a recipe for disaster and since you're trying to avoid that, it's important to pay attention.

Busyness is sneaky. What starts as just one or two things can quickly add up more than you can manage. It affects kids and adults in its own way, eventually spilling over into the home in stressful ways. Before you know it, you're all feeling tired, worn out, frustrated or overwhelmed.

So take a good look at your calendar and your family's as well. Be objective and don't be afraid to make some cuts or to decline an invitation. Remember the importance of being, not just doing.

3. Clean, Organize and Declutter

Have you ever noticed the difference in your stress level when your home is clean and organized as opposed to when it's not? There's some major truth behind this, so get ready to get your home in order.

It's not just about aesthetics. Sure, a clean home feels, smells and looks great; but there's more to it than that. When your home is in order, your stress levels will follow suit. There won't be stress due to feeling overwhelmed by messes or not being able to find things or frustration due to rifling through cluttered cabinets looking for something.

Remember that this is all a process, however. It's something you must stay on top of — this is the key to reducing the stress of it all. Try coming up with a cleaning schedule that breaks tasks out among different days, with certain things happening each day such as sorting and recycling the mail, taking out the garbage or doing a load of laundry from start to finish.

Getting the whole family involved will lighten the load, teach responsibility to younger children and create a harmonious flow throughout your home. This will ensure nobody feels the brunt of doing it all, which cuts down on resentment and stress in the long run. Where will you start in your home?

Reducing stress at home can be a tall order for some, but it's also attainable. By focusing on the main sources of stress in your home, making changes and following through, you'll notice improvements in no time.
