28 Days
(Winter Fast 2016)
Learning about Menstration and Fasting
Date: 8/15/2016 9:38:45 PM ( 8 y ago)
It's Day 28 - lunchtime, have been up since 9:30, getting up earlier lately - still a sleep in cat, the mornings are not near so cold now and today the outdoors is actually really warm for he first time! Spring is here, early this year - it's still Mid August, normally the coldest month of the year - we really are having the mildest and shortest winter this year, even thinking about doing without the fire I'd normally have running 24/7
Last time I wrote was day 25, to report in I ate my order of dumplings, very slowly over that day and the next morning - having 3 or 3 of them at any one time with chinese vinegar - and I drank some avocado smoothie, the rest of my watermelon juice and some water and tea and a cup of broth.
On Day 26 I had the good quality hamburger in the evening after a big day of work - I ate it slowly, but after the dumplings was able to eat it all in one session and hoped that would trigger my body to menstruate by giving it some iron. It went down well - no digestive problems, enjoyed it and it felt like a good thing. I also drank some sour cherry juice, the rest of my avocado smoothie and some tea and water.
On Day 27, still no period, I ate a bit of lamb along with tea, weak coffee and soda water. Had a bit of popcorn as well that evening with a movie. I also had a probiotic pill as I'm back home where they are.
Now its day 28, I've done the laundry and hung it out, cleaned the kitchen and made a jug of watermelon/red cabbage juice with some liquid O2 added to it for the health benefits and detox that gives - have had some weak milky coffee and am about to head out for a couple of hours of bushwalking and buddhist practice on this glorious warm day with my juice.
I got a bag of beef bones yesterday and have put them in a pot with a couple TBSP of grape vinegar and water to cover - so today I'll make my first bone broth - have found some great instructions on how to make the really kick-ass kind. I've also had a bit of a change in thinking about this whole very late period thing - its 40 days now, I'm normally every 28 - had looked up the issue on google but not found much, today I searched it here on cure zone and the info was much more helpful - seems it is something that happens to people on fasts, they can miss one, or have them come very late and be very light and shorter etc - perhaps the body not needing to cleanse as much because you're already cleansing, also the body not using as much nutrient and making itself available for reproduction etc in a time of more energy use, scarcity what have you. I found this link made sense of it for me and put me at ease

So maybe I should just not worry about it really - I bought 4 small lamb chops thinking they would help build up my depleted iron, and I'll cook them up one or two each eve till they're gone - but I don't want to really stop the fast and would like to go on after that and do another 10 days just purely on liquids and broth again
then maybe eat a little again like I have been
and keep going like this for another maybe 20 all up before I really start to wind it all up.
I didn't think I was going to fast this long when I started this journey, I'm really enjoying it however and don't feel at all like stopping. If anything I am comfortable and very happy with the fast or partial fast, mainly liquid diet I've been on for the latter half of this period of time and content to continue with that until I feel like going back to more of a solid food diet. I do want to transit slowly and over a long period of time, eventually going from eating one little meal to two and maybe keeping to just that and a morning juice over the summer etc. Two meals a day is really lots in general anyway I find. I haven't been a 3 meals a day person for a long time really - what I do want to do and have been thinking about is work out some calorie controlled menu plans for when I am back on solids - I've got a box of miracle noodles for example, working out a few ways to have those and counting calories so I can really continue to get back to my ideal weight - when I was in my teens and 20's my weight came in around 130-145 lbs and it crept up in my 30's and 40's to 160-188 lbs - I look pretty good and fit into my clothes very nicely between 160 & 170 but I'm still asking myself why I got heavier as I got older and if I wouldn't feel and be healthier without that extra weight. For a long time I never thought I'd get back down under 160 - I feel differently now tho, like I could get back down to my more youthful weight - not so much because I want to look that much smaller, I'm looking pretty good! I don't want to keep creeping up to the high end when life gets busy and I'm not keeping a calorie count or fasting etc... I think if I really shed the weight I've gained and get back down to that youthful weight, when I do gain it won't be to the same point... kind of shift myself back a decade and change the range
I know I have to become more and more aware of counting calories and meal plans in general - intermittent diet plans and so on - and I want to prepare more of a little book for myself to live by in that way with recipes, calorie counts, meal plans, options... I think its too boring to live this way 100% of the time, of course sometimes you're out to dinner with friends, indulge in some decadent pastry, what ever - but it needs to be balanced and there needs to be a 90% or at least 80% healthy pattern!!
It's a lifelong journey & I keep learning and refining, feel really good that I've come farther this year than I have in the fasting journey - have fasted a lot this past spring/summer/autumn and now winter into spring again & I can feel something new, a deeper change in myself developed from the continuity. Like my yoga, many years of practice and return to the practice have made the practice effortless and ingrained in a way it never was initially.. Now I don't fall off and on the wagon or experience the same kind of start up inertia if I have not done it all week - it doesn't seem to matter, I just start and its a routine I've ingrained so deeply - it comes more easily. If anything, I feel more energized, lighter, stronger and more like pushing myself.
