#ScrippsNatSup Reviews--Mind Blowing Morning Jan 18,2015
I had a mind blowing morning the third day of the 12th Annual Scripps Natural Supplements Conference.
The first talk I heard was by Michael D. Lewis, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPM who spoke on Neuroprotection: Nutrients to Protect the Brain from PTSD, Injury & Aging. The second speaker was Scott Shannon, MD, a holistic psychiatrist. He spoke on Natural Approaches to Mental Health.
Dr Lewis had an array of slides. One was of a severely injured child in a hospital bed with major head injuries. The prognosis was that that child would never recover or that if she did, she would be severely brain damaged. Dr. Lewis addressed the case with protocols of Omega-3 and DHA. I haven't paid much attention to these substances, however, Dr. Lewis really caught me when he spoke about research he had done that showed many military men, who had committed suicide. They were all deficient in brain chemistry that could have been altered by his protocols. He spoke of doing his protocols with a top level army personnel who felt results with a short period of time.
He triggered all kinds of inspirations about how athletes with sports head injuries could be helped with Omega-3's from fish oil.
I wish I could listen to his entire talk again word for word. It was fascinating. A number of the slides were available on the incredible app for the conference. I will post a few of them here with some luck.
I had my eyes opened to how I could improve my own brain function with the Omega 3's
Neuroprotection: Nutrients to Protect the Brain from PTSD, Injury
Lewis, Michael
Learning Objectives:
Review scientific research how omega 3s support the brain-structurally and functionally.
Discuss how omega 3s may promote the brains ability to withstand psychological and physical injury.
Discuss why optimizing omega 3s are an important foundational tool to help the brain heal after a BI occurs- including severe TBI, acute concussions, and post-concussion syndrome.

Scott Shannon, MD
The second speaker, Scott Shannon, MD, ABIHM. Assistant Clinical Professor Department of Psychiatry University of Colorado, Denver, Colorado totally blew my mind when he started to talk about children exposed to TV at a young age who were detrimentally effected by the rapid shifting of scenes and images. He said that research pointed out that kids developed issues such as ADHD (initials Sp?) through exposure to this technology.
Bingo! I am a constant blogger. I sit in front of my computer for hours at a time, sometimes all day. I am attempting to curb this pattern now, as my heath concerns are off the chart.
In the last three years or more, I have increasingly found it more and more difficult to focus. It is a rigorous activity to get my thoughts coherent. I can turn the page, the URL, and forget what I was doing within seconds.
I have thought for a long time that something in the technology was harming my ability to focus.
I am truly grateful for the degree of success I do have in my life, in spite of this pattern. I notice that if I can focus on one dream, on idea from seed to plant metaphorically, I do well. Sometimes, in certain settings, my ability to let go and follow a flow can lead to very magical outcomes and synchronistic meetings. This was happening to me repeatedly on the first day of the Scripps Natural Supplements Conference, as well as toward the end.
There are times when I am spirit led, both on the computer and in 3D. Often this can happen at a conference.
Dr. Shannon spoke to numbers of remedies that he used in his practice, including CBD's.
I have been turned off to psychiatry for decades, perhaps since my twenties when I had experiences being giving substances that were intended to loosen up my ability to deliver information in a hospital setting to a psychiatrist. Those were the days in the 60's while I was still a teen. In those days, psychosomatic issues were thought of as some kind of disease. They did not appear to see that the body, mind, emotions, and spirit were connected. This came in more with the advent of the Holistic Health Movement in the 80's.
I really had my mind opened by Dr. Shannon who spoke to various substances that he used. I was drawn to the info on CBD's.
The morning really helped me come to terms with my own kind of possible brain disfunction, some that has been a benefit, and some frustrating at times. I thought perhaps my life could be improved using a few of the Natural Supplements these men addressed.
In any case, I wanted to capture this information into a blog post before I move on to other challenges of the evening.

THE GIFTS OF ADHD
As a parent, you already know that your child has many gifts. What you may not know is that attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) related symptoms-the very qualities that lead him or her to act out and distract others-may be among them.
