Properties and Classifications of Herbs; Herbal Glossary

Date:   11/9/2014 8:40:42 AM ( 10 y ago)

I'm more inspired with including herbs as part of my food as medicine. I've taken a liking to some "nervine herbs". "Nervine Herbs are often used to heal and soothe the nervous system, and often affect the respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems as well. They are often used in teas or in encapsulated form.

Properties of Nervine herbs include analgesic, antipyretic, antiasthmatic, antibiotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, sedative, and stomachic.

Some examples of Nervines include chamomile, crampbark, dong quai, ginger, hops, lobelie, scullcap, valerian, catnip, lady's slipper, and sarsaparilla."[1]

I've been enjoying chamomile and hops lately. I have also made infusions of valerian root. I intend to continue research these herbs.

Herb Classification at a Glance -

Plant Group - Aromatic/Pungent

Major Phytochemicals - Essential oils, resins, allyl-sulphides, glucosinolates

Primary Healing Actions - Stimulating (warming or hot), drying (disperse moisture and stagnation), diaphoretic (stimulates perspiration), carminative, expectorant, decongestant, antiseptic, cold and flu remedies

Single Herb Examples -

Aromatic: Eucalyptus, chamomile, peppermint, sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, lavender, fennel
Pungent: Capsicum, ginger, horseradish, clove[2]

I'm impressed that five of the seven herbs I've used to make "Theives" are listed in this group: peppermint, sage, rosemary, thyme and lavender.

January 9, 2018 - More on Thyme -

"...Thyme is a small Mediterranean herb with hidden depths. Thyme remains a powerful medicinal presence in western herbalism. Thyme's strength relates to thymol, its main essential oil, which is twenty times stronger than phenol (carbolic), the standard medical antiseptic. Thymol was first isolated in Germany in 1725 and has been in pharmaceutical use ever since."[4]
