Hemp History Week, June 3-9, Let's Help Legalize Hemp

My spirit is uplifted looking at the June Newsletter for the Dr. Bronner Magic Soap Company.

It's Hemp History Week. Every year I take on a few plants to grow. I am looking forward to being able to legally grow helm from seed in San Diego.

FROM THE NEWSLETTER

Today marks the start of the 4th annual Hemp History Week (June 3-9). Dr. Bronner's is proud to be a founding sponsor and we hope you'll join us at one of the 870 events taking place nation-wide this week.

In this issue of the All-One News we give you a preview of some of the highlights including a new documentary Bringing It Home that's premiering this week. Bringing It Home explores the ongoing efforts to bring hemp farming back to the US and the extensive eco-friendly uses for the plant.

We've been amazed at the outpouring of support for legalizing hemp! Over 10,000 emails and calls have been made to our U.S. Senators in the last week encouraging them to support Sen. Wyden's hemp amendment to the Farm Bill, which we expect will be voted on this week. We have made our voices heard loud and clear in Washington that it's time to bring back hemp farming and end the ridiculous federal prohibition. Key Senate leaders including Sen. Leahy and Sen. McConnell are now advocating for this change in federal law but all Senators need to hear our message. Please call or email your Senators today to urge them to support Sen. Wyden's industrial hemp amendment!

Let U.S. Farmers Grow Hemp

Call or write to your Senators and be rewarded with the danceable song: "Can't Stop" from Ozomatli, a Grammy Award winning band! We need your Senators to become a cosponsor of S. 359, Senator Wyden's companion bill to H.R. 525, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013. This bill would allow farmers in the U.S. to once again have the opportunity to grow this profitable agricultural crop.

DAVID BRONNER HEMP PROTEST JUNE 2012

U.S. drug law defines hemp as a controlled substance, the same as marijuana, making the plants inside Bronner’s trailer illegal. Live hemp seeds may not be imported into the country, and hemp may not be grown. However, hemp food, textiles and other products may be imported or produced in the U.S. from non-living hemp material.

Bronner claims that lab tests confirm the THC levels in his hemp plants is less than .3 percent, the international standard for industrial hemp. THC is the main active chemical in marijuana.

“We import roughly $100,000 dollars a year of hemp oil from Canada,” said Fletcher.

“He’s doing this action in part because he wants to be able to source that hemp oil from American farmers, rather than exporting his dollars to Canada.”

WATCH! BRINGING IT HOME ABOUT HEMP

BRINGING IT HOME - work in progress from

Bringing It Home Movie on Vimeo.

This is a work-in-progress section from BRINGING IT HOME, a documentary currently in production. In this sequence we meet home designer Anthony Brenner, whose mission is to build healthy, toxin-free homes for his clients. Inspired by his young daughter with multiple chemical sensitivities, his quest led him to build "America's First Hemp House" in Asheville, NC, using hempcrete which must be imported. Industrial hemp walls are breathable, carbon-negative, non-toxic, mold-pest and flame-resistant, and can help cut energy bills in half. The one drawback--the U.S. prohibits farming industrial hemp, the non-psychoactive cannabis sativa plant that 31 other nations grow. We also meet other industrial hemp builders and industry leaders at the 2nd Annual International Hemp Building Symposium in Spain, and learn how retrofitting with industrial hemp materials could as a sustainable building material, create 1,000s of jobs in the U.S. and make healthy homes affordable for all. We also follow Brenner as he visits the future site of The Bird's Nest, his dream of a hemp-built group home where his disabled daughter and other children with similar challenges can live and grow in a 100% chemical free environment.
