The Future of TCM Herbs Grown In America
(Plant Your Dream!)

The Future of TCM Herbs Grown In America by YourEnchantedGardener .....

The Future of TCM Herbs Grown In America Now is the time to grow more TCM herbs locally. Be aware of regulatory agencies that may be looking your way soon.

For years I have been saying that
The Traditional Chinese Medical Community
needed to begin growing its own herbal medicines
on American soil. Further, it was the responibilities
of cutting edge schools such as the Pacific College of
Oriental Medicine (PCOM) to have clear directives
inviting their own students to grow some of their own
foods and medicines.

At last year's Pacific Symposium I made a point of
bringing in Bill Tall and his staff from the local
City Farmers Nursery. Each day he gave instruction
on the care and feeding of students through
giving them basic tips about gardening.

A Seed Dream was planted to create an alliance
between the local organic nursery and the college.
Some small rootlets between the Student Government
of the local San Diego campus were started. Bill Tall
and staff are available to begin building up the local
availability of Chinese herbs, and offering tutoring
to the PCOM students

With Spring upon us, is is now timely to further pursue
this relationship.

I say this for a number of reasons.

Aside from the natural connection that students
of the school begin to grow their own medicines,
there is another issue on the horizon that may
effect the financial well being of the school as well
as its graduates who depend on organic sources--
and/or pesticide-free sources of herbs.

How much can we trust the herbs that the school
and other schools and practitioners now purchase from China?

What self regulating internal organizations within
the rather new TCM communities are the watchdogs
of quality control for their own herbs that are
proscribed on a daily basis from the PCOM
as well as other local pharmacies?
What watchdog self regulatory
bodies are looking out for the quality control
of this industry as a whole?

The graduates of acupuncture colleges are already
having an impact on the future of medicine in America.
Many of these graduates one generation back would have
been M.D. graduates. Now they are choosing to invest thousands
in a TCM education.

I want to put out a word of caution to the
new Accupuncture Medicne community.

Be aware, new regulations are coming down the
pike from The FDA and USDA. There are forces
at work who do not think too kindly of your industry,
despite its good works and reputiation as a healing
art that works.

Note the investigations of then ABC I-team reporter
Robert Baskin and how she found contamination
of ginger in herbs sold as organic under the Whole Foods
Market Label in 2008.

How safe are you from such investigations?

What would tests show about the herbs that are
bought and sold today in various herb shops
or your own clinic? It is important to do your
own testing.

An ounce of prevention is worth of pound of cure,
said Ben Franklin. There may be a a version of those
words that apply here.

HIGH FALLS GARDEN

There are high quality growers
who are already inviting more and more relationships
with local, organic farmers and small growers.
I encourage this. There are 100's more growers
that will be needed to keep up with the future
trends. TCM is here to stay in America.
With Health Reform coming in, new laws will
support your industry that can lower health costs.

Jean Giblette has been a lecturer
at the pacific Symposium.

I would invite here back and have her
tech some classes at the college campuses
of PCOM.
