THE BILL
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875

I am not sure that this is going through now.
I have to research this.
The email below suggests that this is going through
now.

FROM THE EMAIL BELOW

"US House and Senate are about (in a week and a half) to
vote on bill that will OUTLAW ORGANIC FARMING (bill HR 875).
There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the
next 2 weeks before people realize what is happening."

December 21, 09

I followed HR 2749 through the House
in August and was appalled that it could pass
so unimpeded. I made a fool of myself
attempting to open the eyes of local to that bill.
I finally surrendered to making a few jabs
on this PLANT YOUR DREAM BLOG.

I have not taken time to look at these links
in the first story. I am amazed that this
is coming through my email on the Winter Solstice,
the Darkest night of the year, but also the night
when more light starts showing up.

Subject: DEVASTATING ORGANIC FARMING BILL HR 875

Dear Farmers Markets Representatives and San Diego Farmers Bureau,

My name is Meaghan Young and I am an artist vendor at the Imperial
Beach Farmers Market. Please read and act now on this devastating bill that
is going to Congress soon. It will outlaw organic farming and put extreme
restrictions on local farmers, and everyone who grows there own food. If it
passes, it will end farmers markets, small farms, businesses, and effect all
people who eat and sell organic food and merchandise. Contact your local
legislators and Congressman. Thank you.

organic foods.....

US House and Senate are about (in a week and a half) to
vote on bill that will OUTLAW ORGANIC FARMING (bill HR 875).
There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the
next 2 weeks before people realize what is happening.

Main backer and lobbyist is Monsanto - chemical and
genetic engineering giant corporation (and Cargill, ADM, and
about 35 other related agri-giants). This bill will require
organic farms to use specific
fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated by the
newly formed agency to "make sure there is no danger to
the public food supply". This will include backyard
gardens that grow food only for a family and not for sales.

If this passes then NO more heirloom clean seeds but only
Monsanto genetically altered seeds that are now showing up
with unexpected diseases in humans.

There is a video on the subject.

The name on this outrageous food plan is:
Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (bill HR 875).
THIS IS REAL, FOLKS! PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL CONCERNED ON
YOUR MAILING LISTS & CALL YOUR SENATE REPRESENTETIVES
TODAY!
Get on that phone and burn up the wires. Get anyone else
you can to do the same thing. The House and Senate WILL pass
this if they are not massively threatened with loss of their
position.... They only fear your voice and your vote.
The best thing to do is go to http://www.house.gov/writerep

all you have to do is put in your zip and it will give you
your congressperson and how to get in touch with them. When
you call their office someone will answer the phone, just
tell them (politely) that you are calling to express your
views on HR 875.
Tell them your views, they'll take your name and
address and pass your comments along to the congressperson.

FROM FOOD AND WATER WATCH
http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/food/foodsafety/background-on-h-r-875

From Jerry Friedman on Sun, April 12, 2009

Just pointing out that the letter Ralph Averill quoted from Rep. Chris Murphy contains a false statement.

The letter says, “Additionally, o rganic food is regulated by the USDA - H.R. 875 deals with the FDA, not the USDA, and doesn’t touch farming practices. H.R. 875 wouldn’t regulate or “shut down” farmers’ markets or backyard growers - if anything, it’ll improve their market share.”

However, Sec. 206 of HR 875 says (note (3) and (4)),
http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/slow_food/blog_post/hr_875/

“(c) Regulations- Not later than 1 year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Administrator, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture and representatives of State departments of agriculture, shall promulgate regulations to establish science-based minimum standards for the safe production of food by food production facilities. Such regulations shall--

“(1) consider all relevant hazards, including those occurring naturally, and those that may be unintentionally or intentionally introduced;

“(2) require each food production facility to have a written food safety plan that describes the likely hazards and preventive controls implemented to address those hazards;

“(3) include, with respect to growing, harvesting, sorting, and storage operations, minimum standards related to fertilizer use, nutrients, hygiene, packaging, temperature controls, animal encroachment, and water;

“(4) include, with respect to animals raised for food, minimum standards related to the animal’s health, feed, and environment which bear on the safety of food for human consumption;”

This obviously would “touch farming practices” and “regulate [...] farmers’ markets or backyard growers”.

They differ from the point of view that this law is dangerous.
