Flu, colds, other diseases and sugar. Part 3

http://hubpages.com/hub/Sugar_Part_3__Teddy_Roosevelt_And_The_FDA

"First we’re told a flu pandemic is immanent and then we’re told it’s not as bad as thought. Next we’re told vaccination will cure the problem and in the same breath we hear the vaccines available aren’t effective against the present strain. ...

In the early 1900’s Dr. Harvey W. Wiley was the head of the Bureau of Chemistry, the predecessor of the FDA, in a meeting with President Teddy Roosevelt. James A. Sherman, who would become vice president, was representing his firm Sherman Brothers of New York, a food processor. Some emissaries of other food conglomerates were present. Everything was proceeding well until Sherman stated, 'Mr. President, yesterday I spoke to you about benzoic acid being used in food. (benzoate of soda or benzoic acid is also known as saccharine). My firm saved over $4,000.00 last year by substituting saccharine for sugar in canned corn. We’d like a decision from you on this point.'

Dr. Wiley not knowing presidential protocol, broke in before being asked and said, 'I’ve conducted many experiments on saccharine. Everyone who ate canned sweet corn was deceived. He thought he was eating sugar when in fact he was eating a coal tar product totally devoid of food value and extremely injurious to health.'

The President turned angrily to Dr. Wiley and said, 'Are you telling me you think saccharine is injurious to health?'

'I don’t think, I know by patient experiment that benzoate of soda or benzoic acid added to human food is injurious to health.' Dr. Wiley answered.

Dr. Wiley didn’t know that the President's personal physician gave him saccharine every day. President Roosevelt was a pre-diabetic or diabetic. Mr. Sherman knew and had asked the question to set Wiley up. The president slammed his fist on the desk and said, 'Anyone who thinks saccharine is injurious to health is an idiot.' The President was angry, the meeting broke up.

The next day the President, ignoring protocol, performed a presidential coup and appointed a board of consulting scientific experts to oversee the Bureau of Chemistry, the board was headed by the inventor of saccharine. After that meeting it appears the Bureau of Chemistry (now FDA) went from 'consumer protection independent' to what it is today. Years later, Dr. Wiley was proven right but by then big business and the FDA were in close company.

Sugar wasn’t left out of foods, read the labels. Anything with 'ose' on the end is a very likely a sugar, fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose and even some that sound totally different like HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and hydrogenate of protein are sugars.

What’s this have to do with the flu? During WW1 sugar was rationed to civilian populations: it went to the troops. The Spanish Flu of 1918-19 didn’t start in the fall during 'colds and flu season', after Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas or in Asia. It started in the spring in Europe with humans, those who’d recently crawled out of the trenches. Nothing indicates they’d fraternized with chickens or pigs. After years of sugar rationing, civilian sugar consumption skyrocketed and the flu pandemic proceeded.

The problems with prevention are: it’s not instant, not a pill, not effective as a quick/fix treatment and not available as a vaccine. The plusses? More cost effective over the long-term, can improve all aspects of one’s life, not required to go to school for eight years to practice, can be used in conjunction with pills and vaccination if deemed appropriate."[2]

"People have been misled about the FDA stamp on a drug. They think it means it's going to work. Studies aren't measuring drugs against the placebos any more because placebos were working 60% of the time, better than the drugs. Drugs are being tested against other drugs."[1]
