I feel comfortable calling Job's Tears
a grain after reading this paragraph:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job%27s_Tears

Job's Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), Coixseed, adlay, or adlai, is a tall grain-bearing tropical plant of the family Poaceae (grass family) native to East Asia and Malaya but elsewhere cultivated in gardens as an annual. It has been naturalized in the southern United States and the New World tropics. Job's Tears is also commonly, but erroneously sold as Chinese pearl barley in Asian supermarkets, despite the fact that C. lacryma-jobi are not of the same genus as barley (Hordeum vulgare).

The mature grains are enveloped by very hard, pearly white, oval structures which are used as beads for making rosaries, necklaces, and other objects. Some varieties are harvested as cereal crops and are used medicinally in parts of Asia.

Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Liliopsida
Order: Poales
Family: Poaceae
Genus: Coix
Species: C. lacryma-jobi

I want to put this wonderful quote
I love on a plaque.

The question I am having,
the quote I like so much by Edmond Bordeaux
Szekely refers to wheat...
and I am wonderful if Job's Tears,
called a grass here, would also be considered
a grain?

Are all grains grasses?
Are all grasses, grains? NO.

Hato Mugi, its cousin, is definitely called a grain.

Coix lacryma-jobi--Job's Tears

Height: 36 in Spacing: 12 in
Type: annual grass
Fruit: Gray

Comments: This ornamental grass is grown for the gray to
black seeds that form on the flower stalks. These bead-
like structures are actually the female flowers. They can
be used to make jewelry when they are fully mature. The
largest plants will result when the plant is given partial
shade although it will tolerate full sun. Job's Tears
will adapt to wet soils so may be used near water.

Propagation: Propagation is by seed. Soak the seed for 24
hours before planting.

Called Richo...

"Can I call it a grain?"

He says yes.

One more time I ask him a question
about eating these...he says again
they are edible.

I have never found this the case.
The outer shell is so hard.

I take a hammer out to the Job's Tears plant
and crack it open. There is a seed inside I can
eat.

He says they are a yin tonic.
He says they are acrid.
Mine have no bitter taste at all.

Are grains all grasses?
