The Earth is asking that We Re-Sign
Our Declaration of Interdependence!
Jonah, a whale of a prophet, went into Nineveh, a city with a lot of slot machines. The people were drunk with sweets. They had lost their sense of what was real. Jonah stuttered and stammered, a sign that a real prophet has journeyed to the heart of the matter, and then come out again to enter the marketplace. He realized he could no longer run away from what he had to do or say. Finally, he learned to go slow quickly; through this, he found the words that could be heard. He told the folks in town that if they did not clean up their act, a big earthquake was going to crack them up for good! He told them that in the supermarket of life, we can each learn to stand in line but not wait for someone else to get us where we are headed. Then he left town and went out to the desert to clean up his own act at the local hot springs.
When Jonah came back to Nineveh, about 40 days later, the city was still standing. Jonah's ego got the best of him. He thought he was a false prophet without a dime. Jonah was actually very rich. His spiritual bank account was very full, but like many of us, he didn't know how to make a withdrawal. Jonah didn't see through his sunglasses that the old city started falling the moment he decided to be a real prophet for the earth.
God spoke to Jonah again, and told him to take time to smell the flowers. While he was out doing his laundry in the desert, so were the other folks in town about their Father’s business. Enough of them cashed in their fine clothes for sackcloth. They poured ashes over their heads. With so much ash around, one wise guy set up a little composting business, and became the patriarch of recycling. His friends elevated him quickly. Soon he was known as the emperor of trash.
Lots of people who had frequented the casinos of life felt remorseful and bored. They decided to go into REAL real estate. Through getting down and dirty in the soil, they were banking on a future that mattered. One fella went into gardening and landscaping. Needing help, he called in a few of his buddies; thus cooperative living was re-invented in the neighborhood! Little did they know, they were replanting the promised land, ONE plant at a time. Because the people took the threat of an earthquake to heart, the city was saved. God saw all this sincere knee bending and was pleased.
Through the activities of a few enchanted gardeners, people like you and me with a few seeds under their belt, and in touch with their deepest Seed Dreams, the Earth continued to flourish and was seen again as Eden. By the time Jonah came back to town, the community already had a garden bearing dividends, and everyone was looking forward to a good yield.
The punch line of our story is: Our generation--this very generation-- can accept the sign of Jonah.
We are wise enough to see the declaration on the wall:
That sign says we are born with a pre-paid ticket to heaven on earth, right here and now,
"Admit ONE. World PEACE CELEBRATION!"
our holy meal ticket says.
We do not have to be dinner for a whale or have plaster crack before we accept we are intended to live as the big ONE.
