5 Important Questions To Ask About Your Drinking Water

If you spend time with any doctor, you'll probably hear the question, "Are you drinking enough water?"

If you spend time with any doctor, you'll probably hear the question, "Are you drinking enough water?" Being hydrated is a critical aspect of your overall health and well-being, and the best way to stay hydrated is to drink water. But when you turn on the tap in your kitchen to fill up a glass, you might wonder just how safe it really is. Here are five important questions to ask about your drinking water.

1. Is Tap Water Healthy?

The first question that pops into your mind is also the most important, which is whether or not tap water is healthy to drink. The answer is fairly straightforward. Unless your local area has experienced a natural disaster or an imminent threat to water safety, then your tap water is safe to drink. If you don't prefer the taste or smell of your tap water, you can use a reverse osmosis water filter to improve these aspects of your drinking water while also filtering out things such as chlorine and other particles.

2. How Do You Monitor the Safety of Tap Water?

The reason you can be confident that your tap water is safe to drink is that the Environmental Protection Agency monitors the safety of drinking water across the country and has strict guidelines on what is considered safe for you to consume. Water utilities have to test drinking water sources regularly, and those reports are public, which means you can access them every year and find out what's in your drinking water.

3. Why Is Fluoride in Tap Water?

You might be surprised to find out that there's added fluoride in the water that comes out of your tap, but there's a good reason for that. Fluoride naturally helps prevent tooth decay, and this is especially important for the children in your life. Having healthy teeth is vital to maintain long-term wellness, and, with the minimal addition of fluoride, your tap water is doing the work to keep your teeth healthy.

4. When Do You Have To Boil Tap Water?

You may have heard of instances when homeowners needed to boil their tap water before using it for cooking or drinking, but that is usually related to a specific incident that triggered a local or regional advisory to boil water. In general, you do not need to boil the water that comes from your taps if you want to drink it or use it for cooking. But if you receive an official notice from the city or municipal water utility that says to boil your water, it's critical to follow all safety precautions.

There are different situations that cause officials to call for you to boil your tap water. Some of these include:

  • A natural disaster that floods or contaminates your water supply

  • A test reveals that there are dangerous organisms in your water

  • A power failure interrupted or stopped the safe flow of water

5. Is Bottled Water Healthier Than Tap Water?

While you may read a lot of fancy claims on the packaging of bottled water, it is generally not safer to drink than tap water. You may prefer to drink a certain brand of bottled water for its taste, or you may enjoy the added electrolytes or flavors of bottled or sparkling water. But if you're looking for an environmentally-friendly alternative to bottled water, then the water that comes from your tap is a great option.

Staying consistently hydrated has many benefits for your health, including better energy levels and stable body functions. Keep a cup or reusable bottle by your desk when you work and in your bag when you go out to help you remember to keep sipping.
