Getting into a medical school is highly ambitious and challenging to get their application accepted. However, there are many tips that people seeking this career can follow to raise their chances of being approved.
Have Experience
A fundamental way to get an application to receive a second glance is by assuring there is medical experience on the applicant's resume.
This can be achieved through job shadowing those in the medical field already. Since the applicant is not a doctor yet, they are not expected to have much experience treating patients, but it is a good sign if there is proof of spending time learning what a future in the medical field could be like for them.
Another way to gain experience is to become a Certified Nursing Assistant or volunteer as an emergency medical technician. Even something as simple as working in a hospital doing simple tasks like data entry can put an application at the top of the pile.
Complete Projects
If someone is pursuing a career in the medical field, showing on an application that the applicant did different research projects will strengthen it.
Completing research projects shows that the applicant has hands-on knowledge of science. A lot of medical schools look for potential students who are excited by research. The best way to show this is to have proof on their application of getting their feet wet already.
Choose a Major
Since there is no major that is simply a pre-med major, an application to med school will need to choose a major they are passionate about and have already achieved a high GPA.
Many applicants to med school will choose to major in Biology, which is a common major to choose when they want a career in the medical field. However, that is not to say that is the only major a person pursuing a job in medicine. Some went into med school and majored in fields such as engineering, English, math, and sometimes even music.
If an applicant wants to be accepted into medical school, they need to show that they have high grades in various science classes such as biology, chemistry, math, and physics. These are a requirement in order to get into medical school.
Apply to Schools
It is not very reasonable to only apply to one school. Many people applying may have that one dream school, but that does not mean only applying there is a good idea.
An applicant should conduct a lot of research on the different medical schools out there, not only that but looking into the cost and have a plan on how they will afford it. For example, many med students have to take out loans to pay, knowing later they can pursue a student loan refinance to help pay it off sooner.
If there is one specific school the applicant is pursuing, and they do not get accepted the first time, there is no shame in trying again later. It is good not to take rejection. Personally, it happens. But if they do not want to wait, applying to numerous other schools is a good idea. That will raise the likelihood of getting accepted.
Be Authentic
There may be times during the application process when the administration will request an interview. In those instances, the best course of action is to be authentic and to do plenty of research on the school. Look into their mission statements to avoid going into the interview blind without knowing much about the institution. Always remain polite to anyone present, even the front desk worker.
It will also help in the interview to have a clear and concise answer when they ask why the decision to pursue med school. They do not want the cookie-cutter answer of wanting to help people. Instead, they want to be able to see the passion behind the answer.
Applying to med school can be daunting, but following these steps will help put their application above the rest.
