As a woman, you're no stranger to the many physical changes that naturally come along with different seasons of life. Understanding what's happening with your body is important no matter which stage you're going through because it will help you not only know how to navigate it but also do so in the way that works best for you.

For many women, reaching the menopause stage can be daunting from both a physical and emotional perspective. It happens gradually, typically over several years, which can make things confusing or frustrating. However, having an idea of what to expect can go a long way in embracing these changes. Here are three telltale signs of menopause to watch for.

1. Physical Discomfort

One of the interesting things about menopausal symptoms is that they can present similar to symptoms you've experienced before. However, you might also notice that they come with greater intensity than what you're used to. You may also experience something completely different.

For instance, chances are you'll experience intense episodes of hot flashes. These can stop you in your tracks and be incredibly uncomfortable. Also, you might notice you experience more frequent breast tenderness menopause than you may have during your regular cycle.

Take note of when you experience these discomforts. Is it typically right around the same time in your cycle each month, or are they happening more frequently? Journaling your physical symptoms is a great way to have a broader view of not only your experiences but also where you might be in the process.

2. Irregular Cycles

When it comes to your cycle, regularity has always been important. Whether or not you were trying to conceive, bring your body to its best physical health, or simply have your body on track, a regular cycle is at the forefront of women's health in general. During menopause, however, you will notice your cycle's regularity changing.

This could be that you miss a few periods here and there, or that your periods become heavier and more painful. You might also experience lighter periods and a shorter cycle than you have in the past.

While it's always a good idea to track your cycles, it's even more important to do so when you're entering the phase of life when menopausal changes typically begin. This will help you to identify patterns and get a better grasp of what's going on with your body.

3. Changes in Mood

Hormones are the mind and body's driving force behind all its functions. In terms of menopause, it's especially important to understand what's happening and how you can support your body during this phase. Mood swings are one of the major signs that your hormones are fluctuating, and also one of the most common signs of menopause as well.

While everyone experiences changes in mood regularly, menopause-related mood changes can seem more intense. You might experience every mood possible, from anger to excessive joy. However, staying in tune with how you're feeling is especially important during this time. As with other symptoms of menopause, mood changes are primarily hormone driven.

Taking good care of your body and mind will go a long way in helping you navigate menopause successfully. Plenty of exercise, quality sleep, solid nutrition, and reducing stress should be non-negotiable. Exploring your options for hormone therapy and holistic remedies is also a must if you feel you could use a little extra help. If you're experiencing depression, don't be afraid to reach out to your doctor or therapist.

Menopause is a natural part of every woman's life. Even though it can present a myriad of unpleasant symptoms, understanding why they're happening is important. This will help you to manage your unique experience the best you can.
