Home. It's where you go to relax, to rest, to connect with your family and to be at peace. It's where you kick off your shoes at the end of a long day and relax. It's where you share meals, make plans and experience life together. Unfortunately, home can also be a place where stress can take over. Stress is real and it can rear its head just about everywhere, whether it's due to finances or marital issues, children or work.

Stress doesn't need to have a place in your home. There are things you can to do lessen it and work through it so your home remains the peaceful place you've always wanted it to be. Here are three tips for transforming your home into a low-stress zone.

1. Fine-Tune Your Finances

Do you find that money is the root of most of your stress at home? If you do, take comfort knowing you're far from alone. Financial troubles can be found just about everywhere and can also have a devastating impact if not worked out.

While everybody's financial situation is different, there are a few things everyone can do to both manage finances and cut down on excessive stress. Oftentimes families get on autopilot mode and there's not as much attention being paid to finances as there should be.

Aside from having a solid budget in place, make it a habit to check in on your monthly bills. Think utilities, groceries and home supplies, insurance and extras. Fine-tune what you can. This might look like comparing home insurance quotes or switching to a more affordable family wireless plan.

2. Simplify Your Lifestyle

Are you constantly running around, dropping your oldest off at baseball practice while your youngest has horseback riding on the other end of town? Is your calendar always full, your schedule always flip-flopping as your time becomes less and less available? Do you overcommit and regret it later? When was the last time you sat down as a family and caught up?

Sometimes families are so busy that there is little time left for the things that matter the most. This can manifest into feeling stressed out, frustrated and exhausted. Children are especially susceptible to this, experiencing their own feelings of burnout.

If any of this hits too close to home, now's the time to do something about it. Don't be afraid to go back to basics. Don't let your calendars rule your lives. Become more comfortable with turning down invitations or caving to pressure to do all the things. Foster family time, whether it's dinner together regularly, a weekly game night or extra reading time together before bed.

3. Come Up With a Plan

Every household has things that need to be done. Whether it's daily chores, weekly errands or the little things that fall between, it all needs to be taken care of. And if it's not evenly distributed among your able-bodied family members, you can expect stress to build.

Start by working on a plan. Dividing household tasks won't just lighten your load, it will give everyone a sense of responsibility and ownership. This is also a great opportunity to teach the value of accountability.

You might be surprised at what kids even as young as two or three can do. Older kids should be able to manage chores such as trash, vacuuming and even lawn care. Responsibility charts can be very effective to streamline the process.

Cutting down on stress is an important part of creating a healthy and happy home. Little changes will make a big difference and while it might seem like hard work initially, things will balance out eventually.

Finally, don't forget that there is a difference between natural and healthy stress (a looming deadline) and invasive and unhealthy stress (worrying about finances). Being aware and able to identify it as it crops up will be a big part of creating a low-stress home.
