"The Heart of the Matter", 36" x 24" Mixed media art by mayah(c)2020
This mixed media painting was started in 2017 when I took an abstract art class. It was painted very quickly, and a plastic "comb" run through the paint before it dried to form the various patterns. I knew it needed a little something else.
When I came across the heart in a magazine supplement advertisement, I thought the colors of the image would go well with the colors of the painting.
The variously colored "dashes" are all hand sewn using yarn; each hole had to be poked into the canvas by hand using a thick carpet repair needle. Needless to say, this project took about 2.5 years to complete!
Magazine image of heart
3-D side image of heart
It was quite a process to make the heart as it is on the art piece. First the magazine image was coated with acrylic glaze to protect it, then glued onto Rhimax paper to make it sturdier, then cut out using an exacto knife to get around all of the little arteries, then multiple layers of purple paint, glue, and acrylic glaze were put on the back and edges for protection and to make it thicker yet flexible so it could be shaped. The canvas was cut so the edges of the heart image could slide in, then were glued on the back. The heart sticks out from the canvas to give it a 3-D effect.
