Ram Dass passed from the body last night December 22, 2019 as we turned from the darkest night of the year—the Winter Solstice—to days with increments of more and more light. December 22 was also the lighting of the first Chanukah candle, aka the Festival of Lights, in the Jewish tradition.
This photo was taken by me about 30 years ago, in a film camera that at times did double exposures if I forgot to turn to a new frame.
Ram Dass had been speaking at a conference in San Diego in the 80’s or early 90’s. I had (and still have!) a favorite cactus that blooms only once a year on special occasions, some really remarkable occasions. The flower is a delicate pink and has stamens that remind me of people standing in a circle, hand in hand.
It had bloomed the day Ram Dass was speaking. I took the flower to the event. I showed it to him and said that it had bloomed in his honor. He was quite taken with the bloom and its remarkable spiritual hue!
And...I guess I forgot to advance the film, because this double exposure happened. I was sad for awhile that I didn’t get just my picture of Ram Dass, but now I’m very glad I got this special synchronistic double exposure!
May his work and good deeds continue to contribute to a renaissance of good will between all Peoples.
I have had a relationship with this plant for many years and can reflect on other mystical moments when it bloomed.
