Mixed media "Monarch Butterflies": acrylic painted art board that is made out of 100% recycled materials (distributed by Michael's Art Mart), found tree bark, reused magazine photos of monarch butterflies from NRDC newsletter.** The butterflies were coated with non-VOC acrylic glaze, cut out, pasted on recycled cardboard, and painted around the edges. They stick out two inches from the background for a 3-D effect. I've discovered that it is much easier to handle magazine photos by first coating them with acrylic glaze before cutting them out or pasting them down; the glaze adheres the print and keeps it from smudging. It also protects the photo from tears, water, and accidental spills of glue or paint.
Mixed the acrylic paint for Monarch Butterflies on a scrap piece of watercolor paper, and used this scrap paint palette to make the backgrounds for the next two pieces of art. Coated the paint palette with acrylic glaze and added on fabric and thread scraps. The clam shell and butterfly clam shells from California Wave and Ocean Wave were found on the beaches of Southern California. Frames for all pieces are reused from local thrift shops; Ocean Wave frame repainted with acrylic.
Eco Art and Eco MaGs by mayah utilize recycled components and earth-friendlier materials whenever possible.
