When you’re congested whether it is due to allergies, the flu or a cold, the simple act of breathing can be a challenge. When you have nasal congestion the nose is stimulated by irritants and it causes valves to open in the nervous system and results in more blood more blood entering the nose. This can cause swelling in your nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe. Often over-the-counter medications such as decongestants are typically used for the stuffiness and headache caused sinus congestion, many easy home remedies can offer natural relief for sinus congestion. Here are a few tips to start breathing easier.

Use a Humidifier or Vaporizer

Battling allergies can leave you feeling dried out and dehydrated and many people turn to humidifiers or vaporizers to relieve the pressure. Humidifiers help break up congestion by adding moisture to the air, and in turn this helps to thin the mucus in your nose. Make sure to keep your humidifier clean to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.

Stay Hydrated

Many people find relief by drinking liquids to help relieve a stuffy nose. It’s important to stay hydrated however the effect of hot liquids on your allergy congestion can help soothe the irritation. Try hot teas such as chamomile and green tea.

Vitamins and Herbs

A few herbs, especially things like menthol and eucalyptus oil, can help ease allergy symptoms. Menthol can be found in inhaled balms and rubs for congestion. It stimulates the nerve receptors in the nose, which makes the nose feel like more air is going through it.  Additionally eucalyptus oil can relieve symptoms. Try a eucalyptus oil steam by using a steaming bowl of water and adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil into it. Create a tent with a towel over your head and around the bowl and breathe in the steam for about 10 minutes.

Eat Some Garlic

Garlic is believed to have both antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it useful in treating a host of problems, including congestion and allergy symptoms. If you are not fond of the taste and smell of raw garlic, try slicing up a few cloves of garlic and put them in a small pot along with about a cup of water. Heat until steaming, and then carefully inhale the garlic steam.

Revise Your Nighttime Routine

Sleeping with allergies can be a difficult task. Try putting an extra pillow under your head because this helps drain your sinuses. Make sure your bedroom climate is humid, and run a humidifier while you sleep.
