HISTORY OF THE TREES FOR HEALTH PROJECT
Trees for Health was a year-long (1998) public education project that took place in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The project covered trees that have traditional and current medicinal uses. Funding for the project was provided in part by the 1998 California ReLeaf/National Urban Forestry Grant Program and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Local sponsors were People for Trees, The Herb Club of San Diego and Balboa Park.
In 1998 the project purchased or received donations of twenty medicinal trees and the Balboa Park nursery staff directed by Kathy Puplava, Park Horticulturist, and Paul Sirois, Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, planted them. Also included in the project were twelve genus of medicinal trees that were already in Balboa Park.
Most of the newly planted trees are in the West Mesa area in a section called The Medicinal Tree Garden.
