This small square of silk, approximately 4” X 4”, has gone through several metamorphoses during its lifetime. It started out as part of the waistband of a long wrap-around skirt bought many years ago; the old skirt was then used as a window covering for many more years until the sun deteriorated the silk, leaving only the waistband intact. I was going to throw the whole thing away until I realized that the silk had an interesting pattern embossed on it. Using this pattern as a guide, I hand embroidered the design.
I first learned to hand embroider as a young girl, but had not done it for many years and had to re-learn how to do some of the stitches: French knot, chain stitch, lazy-daisy. It took many hours to complete the design on this small piece of silk. I find art in general to be very meditative, and often I forget the time as the hours fly by; hand sewing has the same effect on me. My mind goes blank and I am not aware of the clock; I am just sewing, literally one stitch at a time, peaceful, calm, and relaxed.
